It hasn't been legal tender for 14 years, but in January a German supermarket chain will start accepting Deutschmarks again.

Kaufland supermarkets will be accepting the former German currency at their cashiers.

To support the campaign, many of the company's products will also be given a 1960s design to enhance the nostalgic theme. [...]

When I was in Germany back in the 60’s 5 marks could feed you and get you drunk. Toward the end of the month it stretched further if you know what I mean.

Reichsmarks were demonetised in April 1947 by the Allied Occupation Council. They were still used by the citizenry, unofficially, for another couple of years.

The farthest reaching effect of this ruling was, oddly, the effect it had on the Post Office. Absolute chaos was the norm in stamp issuance for at least 2 years, as existing postage issues were 'covered', i.e. restamped, not unlike US Battle of Monmouth commemoratives, specifying the official currency and the (effectively) denomination of reissue.

To philatelists, a fascinating story. To normal people, thus most FReepers, a boring sideshow.

Happy New Year, everyone!

And to celebrate the new diversity, a coupon that grants the bearer license to kill 3 Jews will be distributed free with each old style bill used.

Good news I still have 10 DM laying around.

Bad News. I won’t be back in Germany until AFTER the ‘sale.’
