The New York Police Department moved swiftly late Tuesday and early Wednesday to beat back accusations of statistical manipulation leveled by its former commissioner, Raymond W. Kelly, that called into question the city's official count of shootings and murders.
In a briefing with reporters at Police Headquarters, a news release that contained a point-by-point rebuttal and an appearance on national television by the current commissioner, William J. Bratton, on Wednesday, police officials denied any altering of statistics and defended the city's low crime figures for 2015.
"He is engaging in politics, and as you know the first casualty of politics is usually the truth," Mr. Bratton said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "Mr. Kelly is selling a book. The New York Post is reporting he's thinking of running for mayor. I stand by my crime statistics because they are factual, they are the truth."
Mr. Bratton added: "Everything he said yesterday in his statement we have refuted, we have rebutted."
After challenging Mr. Kelly to provide details to back up his accusation, first made last week, of "some issues" in the numbers, Mr. Bratton on Wednesday challenged Mr. Kelly to "man up" and name the person inside the Police Department whom Mr. Kelly has cited as the source of his information about manipulation. "It's going to be up to him to prove his allegation," Mr. Bratton said.
Asked whether he would be comfortable with an outside investigation of the statistics, Mr. Bratton said: "What are you going to investigate? Any Tom, Dick or Harry -- even one who has the stature of Mr. Kelly -- comes up and alleges without substantiation? He talks about he has a source in the Police Department. Well, man up. Provide the source. This is a former police commissioner basically dealing in tabloid politics."

Bratton did the same thing in LA by reclassifying and mislabeling stuff. That’s what got him the NY gig. Anyone remember or can validate?
Saw this story on Blue Bloods a few years ago. They fired a chief bucking for a promotion.
If Bratton had any pride he would resign. Dump DiBlasio and Bratton. Bring back Ray Kelly.
My car was broken into and the police office didn’t want to fill out a report a few years ago. This has been going on for a while..
