Officials warn thousands of homes in Missouri, Illinois threatened by floods

ST. LOUIS - Federal officials were monitoring 19 vulnerable levees on the rising Mississippi River and its tributaries, warning that hundreds of homes in Illinois and Missouri could be threatened by a rare winter flood that already forced the partial closure of interstate highways and widespread evacuations.

As the swollen rivers and streams pushed to virtually unheard-of heights Tuesday, an unknown number of inmates were transferred out of an Illinois state prison threatened by flooding and Missouri's governor activated the National Guard to help divert traffic from submerged roads.

Record flooding was projected in some Mississippi River towns after several days of torrential rain that also caused sewage to flow unfiltered into waterways.

The Meramec River near St. Louis was expected to get to more than 3 feet above the previous record by late this week.

At least 18 deaths over several days in Missouri and Illinois were blamed on flooding, mostly involving vehicles that drove onto swamped roadways.

Not that I'm defending him--but what power does a governor have over the weather?

——what power does a governor have over the weather?-——

it’s not the weather, but the infrastructure.

did the governor or did he not properly manage dike maintenance? was he paying more attention to dykes than dikes?

The dikes are fine--however, one faces the issue of diminishing returns as you increase their size.

We're talking record flooding here. I spent 20+ years in the area, and never heard of I-70 closing due to flooding before.

I'm not even sure that the governor is responsible for dike maintenance. I'm thinking it's the Army Corps of Engineers' duty here.

You are correct. In the flood of 2011 the Army Corps of Engineers decided to blow up dikes south of Cairo, Illinois, to relieve the pressure on dikes at Cairo.

To save that crappy little slum town of Obama people but flooding 130,000 acres of prime farm land in southeast Missouri and destroying more than 100 homes.

Better convene a new study and congressional hearing. That ought to fix everything.

It was the Dardenne Creek that came over the highway. This crosses the highway near the Old towne St. Peters. The Dardenne is quiet this morning and back to being a "creek."

People are slow learners.

You’re not going to ever tame the big rivers in MO, especially where they all come together in St Louis.

Don’t build a house in a place where the river has been seen flowing in history past. They come back now and then.

You might want to check out the Great Flood of 1993. That was the record flood.

It was a record flood—but I-70, at that location—did not flood even then.

Get ready for the newsblaster superlative “Unprecidented” to be used to associate this with global climate change.

There is death and destruction all over the midwest due to the recent severe weather. The useless pos jeremiah nixon can't take any of the credit or blame for what's going on out here right now.

I'm sure you think that it was funny, but that was a jackass comment that you made. It would be a good time for you to STFU.

I sure hope the mid-street memorial (a/k/a pile of junk) to Michael Brown (St. Swisher Sweets) isn’t washed away by the waters if they reach Ferguson, MO. That would be sad.

Seriously, prayers that the flood waters will recede without delay.

No, I don’t think it’s funny. Same way I didn’t think Katrina was funny. What I thought was amusing and rather sad is that once more a Democrat is asleep at the switch while people are fighting for their lives.

I’m just waiting to see how Nixon manages to blame George Bush for this one.
