Suspect hit in shootout with off duty officer (officer selling personal guns)
The Houston Chronicle ^ | 30 December 2015 | Mike Glenn

An off-duty Houston police officer thought he was meeting two men who expressed an interest in buying a couple of his personal firearms. Something didn't feel right to HPD officer C. Curry when he pulled up to a small public park in south Houston on Tuesday. He became the victim of an attempted armed robbery that quickly turned into a gunfight, police said. The officer-involved shooting happened about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday outside Cloverland Park in the 3800 block of Hickok Lane at Scott. Curry had placed an ad on the Texas Gun Trader website about selling two handguns he owned. Police believe it was the robbery suspects who answered the ad. Curry agreed to meet them at Cloverland Park.

This is bad for gun owners...now we know the Amish are watching the gun ads. He should have killed them both. Would have sent an appropriate message to others who would try the same.

guessing the cop is also a FFL... I’m not and don’t need to worry about this, I do my transactions via an FFL and definitely not at a South Houston Park....

Almost killed him, gun jammed. Very bad. Better to meet ONLY where a bunch of people are around if you feel the need to sell a gun like that. Less likely to happen. Frequently too costly to go through FFL and fees too high for online. If I sell one, it's usually to a friend I know, so less chance for a shootout (lol).

Don't worry, the administration is hell bent on taking them all anyway. Looks like no one is going to stop them.

After reading and rereading your post, I have to disagree.
Dealing with an FFL means the Federals have a record of your purchase. They scare me more than the ferals do.
I just recommend extreme caution before, during and after any transaction.
I do agree a park is not public enough.

"I do agree a park is not public enough."

I generally choose someplace not only public but that has several security cameras present. And I let the other party know that's exactly why I'm choosing that spot. Any legitimate buyer/seller would have no problem with that.

“I do agree a park is not public enough.”......

And bring “backup”, another person who also “carries”.

No ffl in most states to sell your unwanted firearms. Only if you make it a business.

I have in the past delt with my gun clubs and friends when selling or buying used firearms. Not a fan of FFL and government regulation and their knowledge of my gun ownership. Shall not be ‘infringed’ means just that.

Now that NY requires FFLs for ALL firearms transactions, I will wait to move out of this hell hole before doing any more transactions

“Dealing with an FFL means the Federals have a record of your purchase. They scare me more than the ferals do.”

Well, if I’m not selling to someone I totally know and trust then I’m using an FFL.. you guys do what you want..

But I’m meeting at the gun shop, where the guys behind the counter open carry and I pay them 25 dollars for the service..

I would never meet a stranger for a gun transaction anywhere but my local gun shop..

and as far as FFL goes, if I sell to a stranger, then I want the feds to know the gun is now theirs not mine.. I don’t need any midnight knocks.. not good for anyone’s health..

that’s the reality and I’m not too concerned with it.. Things get sideways and the government goes totally Ingsoc, well we’ve got bigger problems than a database...

Why would you guess the cop is an FFL? Face to face sales between two private individuals who both reside in the same state (the infamous gun show loophole) is perfectly legal in Texas, as it is in most (but not all) states.

If he were in fact an FFL, then the cop would have been required to have the purchaser fill out an ATF form 4473 and to run a NICS background check on the purchaser, even if the sale occurred in a South Houston Park. (The not-so-famous requirement of any FFL, even if they're at a gun show.)

He should have known better to meet in a park for this sort of transaction. Police everywhere say come to the station to make sales off Craig’s List or other internet sales. with strangers.

PK, I understand.
You trust the Federals more than you fear the Ferals. I don’t.

“Why would you guess the cop is an FFL?”

Because I was making a HUGE assumption that the cop was responsible...

See my post to Tupelo... but you guys are nuts if you would sell any weapons to total strangers and keep the paper trail back to your house.. ESPECIALLY south Houston thugs..

Here’s the next headline I see
Houston PD Guns used in local homicide....

That is an unfair assessment..

I live within a system - which is not perfect to my liking - but a system nonetheless - I will play the game and will do what I need to do - but I will not be an idiot like this cop - if you want to continue support this cops actions based on your purity of convictions.. knock your self out...

Good advice. Or at least a friend of a friend.
