Most Jesuits I have encountered seem like embittered ex-believers, crestfallen, angry, even livid that their faith has not produced what was prayed for, hence drawn into compulsive ridicule of the faith and the faithful from that point on. I would like to think there are exceptions.

Perhaps you haven't met enough Jesuits. The ones you hear about in the news tend to be the liberally outspoken ones. The vast majority are not. I was lucky enough to attend Jesuit HS & college. Some of the best, smartest, and most conservative men I've ever met are Jesuits.

Unfortunately, while Jesuits do take a vow of obedience to the Pope on matters of Church doctrine, the Society was formed to be apart from the Church on other intellectual issues.

I went to a Jesuit school and I know a lot of Jesuits. I had one Jesuit priest as a teacher who was a conservative. He has been dead for years. All of the others are to the left of 0bama.
