Big Geek Dad ^ | Tom Brokaw

Posted on 12/26/2015 2:36:26 AM PST by afraidfortherepublic

A tribute by Tom Brokaw and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to Colonel Gail Halverson, "The Candy Bomber". Colonel Halverson acquired the name for his efforts during the Berlin airlift to provide the German children with candy. He called this candy parachute supply effort "Operation Little Vittles" and it was greatly appreciated by the children. To learn more about Colonel Halverson watch The Candy Bomber Interview.

For some reason I cannot repost the url for this site. Just go to the link to watch the whole thing. You won't be sorry.

This is definitely worth watching. An interview by Tom Brokaw with “The Candy Bomber” otherwise known as Colonel Gail Halverson who dropped candy from his plane for the German Children during the Berlin Airlift. Colonel Halverson was 92 years old when this interview was conducted shortly after the Candy Bomber Christmas Tribute by Tom Brokaw and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The link to this remarkable interview is also at the source link.

I hope I’m not abusing my “ping list” privileges, but this interview and tribute to a true American Hero may be off topic, but they are really worth watching this Christmas season. I don’t want any FReeper who is part of the core of this organization to miss this remarkable story.

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, the Revolutionary WAr or Wisconsin interest ping list. You know which list you are on, and I promise not to ping you to topics that are not your main interest — at least until I see another compelling one.

The first time I ever saw or heard this story was in Leon Uris' Armageddon, a fictional account of the Berlin Airlift.

While the names were changed in that book, he followed, pretty carefully, the main timeline and the salient points of the first battle in WWIII.

Every real story of Gail Halvorson I have seen since then told the same story from a slightly different perspective. It's, simply, a great story in the middle of a great story.

There is a photo from the Berlin Airlift that I saw once, but have never been able to find again. It is heart wrenching.

It shows two tall American pilots standing next to their aircraft after having delivered food to Berlin, looking casual. They have just noticed, standing in front of them is a little girl, little older than a toddler, barefoot in a tattered rag dress and tousled hair, holding up her rag doll to them, as if to offer it to them for the food they have delivered.

It needed no caption.

Colonel Halverson is a gem. His story is one that speaks to adults and children alike. The whole Berlin Airlift is amazing, a testament to determination and compassion.

The Berlin Airlift is a shining point in American history. Germans of that era have never forgotten.

I shudder to think what the Obummer/Skerry response to the Sov’s would have been. Pretty sure they would have given them West Berlin.
