MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) – Somali Islamist militants sprayed a Kenyan bus with bullets on Monday, killing two people, but a passenger said he and fellow Muslims defied demands from the attackers to help identify Christians traveling with them.
The attack took place in Mandera, in northeast Kenya. A year ago, al Shabaab gunmen stormed a Nairobi-bound bus in the same area and killed 28 non-Muslim passengers execution-style.
Abdi Mohamud Abdi, a Muslim who was among the passengers in Monday’s incident, told Reuters that more than 10 al Shabaab militants boarded the bus and ordered the Muslim passengers to split away from the Christians, but they refused.
“We even gave some non-Muslims our religious attire to wear in the bus so that they would not be identified easily. We stuck together tightly,†he said.
“The militants threatened to shoot us but we still refused and protected our brothers and sisters. Finally they gave up and left but warned that they would be back,†he said.
In previous attacks, al Shabaab has often killed both Muslims and non-Muslims.
Julius Otieno, the deputy county commissioner, confirmed the account, saying that the militants “were trying to identify who were Muslims and who were not,†and that the Muslim passengers had refused to help.
The militants then fled the scene, both men said.

New Operating Proceedure: Al Shabaab gunmen will in the future kill all passengers on any bus to avoid the possibility of looking like fools by allowing even one Christian to escape. Muslims on the bus will understand that it is the will of Allah.
The whole eastern part is Muslin, some by devotion but many solely by culture. Many of these folks are fed up with the actions of jihadists against other Muslims AND non-Muslims.
There are basically decent people among them. Back in 1980, I was privileged to fly an American missionary and a Kenyan former Muslim who had become a Christian evangelist out to Pate Island, off the coast of Lamu. This area had been Muslim since shortly after Mohamed & Co got rolling.
We met with the men of the village in the local mosque. There, they told them of the words of Musa, Daudi and Suleiman (Moses, David and Salomon) which prophesied the coming Messiah.
At each quote of the prophets, the Kenyan evangelist, Morris, would ask, "Is not this so?", to which all the men replied, "Ndio" ("Yes"). Finally, at the "punchline" of his talk, giving the conclusion that many of the men honored by Islam as prophets had prophesied the coming Messiah and that Jesus Christ had fulfilled these prophesies, he asked, "Is not this so?". The younger men sitting on the floor up front, following his chain of evidence and logic, immediately replied, "Ndio". However, the older men realized that they had been 'painted intro a corner' and were silent. Morris said, "Hapana watoto, wazee?" (Not the young men, [what say] the elders?"
The old men sat a moment. then slowly began to nod, "Ndio". They then said, "We will have to think on these things. You must return and we will talk more about this."
While Mandera is a long way from Pate Island, one group semi-nomadic pastoralists and the other fishermen, their belief systems are similar.
I love watching the History Channel....for the life of me I never hear anyone gushing over the “moderate” Nazis of WW2.
The media is relying here on a single witness. And all that witness said is that they gave approximately 6 to 8 Christian women hijabs and told the gunman everyone was Muslim, and the gunman just left. They didn’t refuse to separate or any of the other things the media is claiming.
I am simply not believing this story as told in the original posting of it.
Do you believe that ten terrorist on a bus would not see people: quote -We even gave some non-Muslims our religious attire to wear- end quote.
BTW - It is amazing what a difference a simple fresh water well can make to a village with no close by clean water source. Good work!
If the story is true, we should be thanking and praising them. When in question, what to do??? On this one, I prefer to err on the side of believing it. If not true, no real harm done. If true, what a terrible thing to judge it as false instead of praise and thank them (even selfishly as an example to other Muslims if nothing else, though better out of true gratefulness).

Have read several stories about Muslim and Christian clergy in Egypt meeting in mutual support. Egypt is the only Muslim nation is which Christians are not actively being persecuted. That is before and after the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood. ME is now outlawed in Egypt. The one nation with some sense is hated by Obama. I wonder why??
