When establishment candidates are losing support with the voters, they often resort to their last subterfuge in the bag of tricks. They try to taint their conservative opponent as something less than a consistent conservative in the hopes of deflating the momentum of said opponent. I’ve seen this dynamic play out in almost every competitive primary. And this is exactly what we are seeing with the entire GOP establishment media that is suddenly concerned that Ted Cruz is not really a conservative.
To those of us who worked on the immigration issue in 2013, there was no secret as to who was pushing amnesty and who was fighting for American sovereignty. But who better than Jeff Sessions to set the record straight? Here it is straight from the mouth of the general that Cruz was standing with him “every step of the way”:

“I believe without the vigorous opposition of Ted Cruz, this bill likely would have passed. So we need to thank him for that.”
Notice that Sen. Sessions speaks of the $1.5 billion spent on ads promoting the Gang of 8. Guess who starred in those ads for Mark Zuckerberg? Yup, the junior senator from Florida.
Sessions goes on to recount that day in May 2013, when the Senate Judiciary Committee met to mark up the bill and how Cruz was one of the first people he saw rattle Schumer’s cage.
You won’t see this video played on Fox News. They will continue to entertain themselves within their insular echo chamber. Unfortunately for them, the voters aren’t listening.

I was there. Sessions also said that Cruz was so wound up some of the others actually began to wonder if Ted was anti-hispanic.
Horowitz has been dissembling on this topic from the beginning, refusing to accurately depict Rubio/Santorum’s argument for what it was: not an accusation that Cruz “implicitly” supported legalization (which he then confuses even before with Cruz’s definition of amnesty), but an explicit accusation that Cruz supported legal status for illegals, albeit after the border was secured.
As for Sessions, not even Sessions was talking deportation during the Gang of Eight fight (nor was anybody else on the right), nor is it true when Sessions says that Cruz was with him “every step of the way.” Cruz opposed Sessions on H1Bs, voting down his amendment that would have limited legal immigration, and then responding with his own amendment to expand H1Bs by 500% for the stated purpose that the bill would more likely “pass the House.”
These videos/interviews/articles all miss the primary point: That legal status for illegals after border security was the mainstream position of GOP conservatives, even Rush Limbaugh, during the fight.
This certainly doesn’t make them RINOs, just not leaders capable of shifting the window of discourse where it needed to be.
This is what happens to supporters of an unctuous, arrogant, bombastic man whose appeal rests solely on his ability to cater to the baser emotions of the simple-minded masses.
Combination of Elmer Gantry (without the booze), Huey Long (without the sweat and southern accent), and George Wallace (without the wheelchair).
