Hail to the Chief.
Dave Baldwin, the mastermind behind Milwaukee's legendary spy-themed bar and restaurant the Safe House, died Sunday, his wife, Shauna Singh Baldwin, said.
Baldwin had just retired this summer after nearly 50 years devoted to celebrating the spy craft. In June, at age 84, he sold the Safe House to the Milwaukee-based Marcus Corp., but it remains true to his vision.
With its entry tucked away on an alley off E. Wells St., the Safe House honors a type of 1960s Hollywood image of secret agents and spies. Passwords, secret doorways, spy memorabilia and a booth that spins around to serve as a secret entrance are all featured attractions. A world map by the bar shows other so-called spy safe houses.
Its quirky layout with a maze of interconnected rooms and hallways is also fronted by the Newsroom Pub, the E. Wells St. home of the Milwaukee Press Club that features autographs of dignitaries and journalists who have made their way to Milwaukee in the last 100 years.
And the Safe House is famous for its creative cocktail concoctions, like the "Spy's Demise" and "Hail to the Chief" (also known as "Her Majesty's Secret Service" for women), which is really more of an experience than just a drink.
"Mystery and intrigue has always been with me," Baldwin told the Journal Sentinel in June. "I figured, everyone in town is going to want to go through that door."
Many in town, as well as out-of-town tourists, still do.

Johnny Rivers
There’s a man who leads a life of danger
To everyone he meets he stays a stranger
With every move he makes
Another chance he takes
Odds are he won’t live to see tomorrow

Secret Agent Man
They’ve given you a number and taken away your name
Beware of pretty faces that you find
A pretty face can hide an evil mind
Oh, be careful what you say
Or you’ll give yourself away
Odds are you won’t live to see tomorrow

Secret Agent Man
They’ve given you a number and taken away your name
Swinging on the Riviera one day
And then laying in a Bombay alley next day
Oh, don’t you let the wrong words slip
While kissing persuasive lips
Odds are you won’t live to see tomorrow

Augh... RIP & Condolences to his family & friends.
I don’t think it’s the one he’s at in the photo, but they have an excellent copper top bar there. ‘Love’em, germs cannot grow on it.
Went there a bunch in college.
RIP...prayers to the family....
