Trump's response has been in such cases to ignore, restate your position more loudly than ever, ridicule the other guy, and just move on.

IMO besides ridiculing Rubio Cruz has done all of those things you suggest.

Whats happened with this issues more reflects a change in strategy by the GOPe than it does anything else. They now see Rubio as their last best chance and are trying to boost him into second place. Once that happens, you see the other establishment stooges drop out with their support presumably going to the GOPe's candidate.
