The media needs to stop telling this lie about Donald Trump. I’m a Sanders supporter — and value honesty Trump's words on Mexicans have been misconstrued by all sides. This liberal, Puerto Rican professor says enough

Alberto A. Martinez

It’s time to start cleaning up the mess of misinterpretations about Donald Trump.

Back in June, I first saw Mr. Trump announcing his candidacy for president. What he said about unauthorized immigrants seemed ridiculous so I laughed. I showed the video to friends, and I laughed again. His words were poorly chosen.

But something worse happened. People interpreted Trump’s words in the most awful and offensive ways.

In one of my courses, at the University of Texas at Austin, I asked my students: “What has Donald Trump said that you found most offensive?” One student raised her hand high: “He said that all Mexicans are rapists.” I asked a coworker the same question. He replied: “He said that all Mexican immigrants are rapists.”

I explained that Trump said no such thing. This is what Trump said:

“When do we beat Mexico at the border? They’re laughing at us, at our stupidity. […] When Mexico sends its people they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you; they’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists, and some, I assume, are good people. But I speak to border guards and they tell us what we’re getting.”

You might well dislike Trump’s words. I did. But let’s not make it worse. He did not say that all Mexicans are rapists. Yet that’s what many commentators did.

Thank goodness someone other than the ‘silent majority’ can see what Trump is meaning when he says things....

Three Guiding Principles of the modern `Journalist`:

Willingness to convert to liberalism - all forms, or suffer career death.

Ability to lie straight faced though omission, context edits for flat out.

Proven ability to take down political opponents

The grand prize of journalism under the above guiding principals is a network news slot.

There are no journalists who adhere to the journalism code of ethics as far as the eye can see.

They adhere to the guiding principals above. Brent Bozell and others make a pretty good living documenting that fact.

http://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp

Here is the pre-amble:

Preamble

Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. Ethical journalism strives to ensure the free exchange of information that is accurate, fair and thorough. An ethical journalist acts with integrity.

The Society declares these four principles as the foundation of ethical journalism and encourages their use in its practice by all people in all media.

It is to laugh. - E01

I just heard the clip of Sanders repeating this lie from the debate as I drove to work—and lost my last shred of respect for Sanders. I had thought him a nut job...but at least an honest one....no more. It saddens me.

“I thank this liberal professor for his honesty and integrity in refuting the libel/slander against Trump. “

Indeed. Too bad he didn’t bring up some of the reality of Trump’s comments.

The open border crowd keeps telling us that illegal aliens/hispanic immigrant criminals don’t commit crimes any more than the native population...take a look at L.A. FBI Most wanted, which is running about 90%!

Phoenix, Az most wanted By DEA.. They won’t tell you if they are illegal aliens, but the birthplace of most of them are ‘MEXICO”...Trump is right! FACTS.

Muslims and Mexicans,Oh my! Too bad these groups don’t figure out how they are being used by the DNC!

Here’s a WHOPPER against #Trump that the democrats were pushing during the Saturday debate! And no, the moderators didn’t bother to correct the fact that Trump has NEVER called for ousting any US citizen Muslim or any existing Muslim immigrants!

Framing Donald Trump as a “racist” and “fascist” due to his proposal to temporarily ban Muslim immigration and visitation towards the ends of preventing Islamic terrorism, Martin O’Malley invoked a Muslim friend’s politically-inclined young children. Characterizing Trump as a “clear and present danger” within American politics, O’Malley shared what he hoped was a moving personal anecdote towards discrediting the Republican front runner’s candidacy.

“Dad, what happens if Donald Trump wins and we have to move out our home?”, asked one of Sharif’s sons; ten and twelve-year-old boys. Sharif is said to be a doctor and a “proud American Muslim” in Maryland.

“(Americans) must never surrender our Americans values to racist, must never surrender to the fascist pleas of billionaires with big mouths. In his opening statement,” O’Malley said while not-so-subtly maligning Trump.

O’Malley was unified with Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders in characterizing Trump as “divisive” during ABC’s Democratic Debate on Saturday. Moderators Martha Raddatz and David Muir neglected to ask about divisive rhetoric from the Democratic presidential hopefuls related to income and wealth disparities between American families. All three candidates made several references to the “one percent”, “super wealthy”, and millionaires not paying their “fair share” in taxes. No mention was made of approximately 50% of Americans paying no federal income tax.

“He said that all Mexicans are rapists.”

My little-old-lady quilting group friends said the same thing. They also said that “Trump hates immigrants”. I said, “I guess that’s why he married two of them.”

Same thing with his statement about stopping Muslims from coming into the country. He did say that, but he finished by saying something like “until the government can figure out the problem”. People only know about the first part of the sentence — ‘cause that’s all the MSM plays.

It’s so frustrating.
