There was a black space man in the original Planet of the Apes movie, but he got written out of the script pretty fast, leaving Heston to do all the heavy work.

He was - and head of the Jedi Council....

We plan on seeing the latest and are watching the first 6 episodes at home (wife borrowed the set from a friend).
