"I rented a 4WD Explorer and drove down the Donner Pass from Reno in snow a few years ago."

An adventure, especially when you can fill the thermos with hot, black coffee, pull over at a rest stop and enjoy mother nature at her finest.

Sometimes it will snow 2 inches an hour with the wind blowing 60mph.

And, sometimes you have to pour a bit of Wild Turkey in that black coffee to steel your nerves for the next 40 miles.

A friend has a house up in the Truckee area that he rents out. The last few seasons they typically got weekend renters during ski season. He told me today that weekend renters who have booked his house are now calling and asking to rent the entire week after their weekend. He’s ecstatic. C’mon rain and snow.

Just starting to rain here on the San Fran Peninsula right now. Still waiting for the deluge here — it’s mostly been small to moderate storms blowing over pretty quickly every four or five days.

Yeah, 7ft of new concrete during Christmas week in the Sierras?

He could probably ask, and get, $500/day.

Hoping 4WD is enough. Never in my life have I needed to add chains to drive through snow anywhere. But as this is California, figure ridiculous is most likely rule.

“Why would someone name their website after the notorious domestic terrorist organization from the 1960’s?”

Wondered that myself.

Maybe because they are ignorant, supercilious, leftard media slime?

Looks like the drought is over. Now if Calif could just learn how important it is to catch the water in a near desert such as they live in instead of letting the tree huggers win the day.

No kidding.
16 years in Minnesota taught me that.

It would be like naming your veterinary clinic “Black Panther” or something, right?

4WD lets you get stuck deeper and in way more remote places where AAA doen’t service.

Dad lives in Reno, I’m in Bakersfield CA, about 415 miles. Was going to drive up over XMAS, but I’ll wait and fly in in a month or two.

The Donner Party. Read a book about that once. What a grim story that is.

Here’s a really good graphic from the State. This particular one is for Lake Shasta, but you can get the same interactive chart for any of California’s major reservoirs.

http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cdecapp/resapp/resDetailOrig.action?resid=SHA

Note: you can draw any year’s storage profile using the box containing the year of interest, then clicking on “draw chart.”

Dunno - but I think the site is now owned by The Weather Channel - so it's sort of appropriate.

It’s coming. By the time April gets here we will be real tired of heavy rain.

My wife and I did that years ago. Visited my aunt and uncle in Sun Valley, Idaho and went skiing on Baldy. Then took the plane to Hawaii. We even got to stop in San Fran, spend the night at home, drop off our winter gear, and travel light to Hawaii (back in the days of “open jaw” frequent flyer flights). Life is good, indeed.

Yeah!!
Keep it coming for them and get the snowpack and reservoirs rebuilt.
