Many historians are challenging long-held opinions of the origins of Islam. Tom Holland examines whether the religion was born fully formed, or if it evolved over many years.
Adopting the theories of academic historian Patricia Crone as a basis, Holland asserted that there was little hard evidence for the origins of Islam and asked why it took several decades after the death of Muhammad for his name to appear on surviving documents or artifacts. Arguing that there was little evidence for how the faith was born, he suggested that the city of Mecca may not have been the real birthplace of Muhammad and Islam, and â while not clearly disputing Muhammad's existence as a real historical figure â claimed that much of the Islamic origin story was later developed in the early years of the Arab Empire.

there are quite a few “religions” that are a hoax:
1. most famous- scientology— new
2. my #1 —— Mormonism— 160 years old
3. of course——Islam— hey-this was made in 666 AD (sarc)
4. moonies — new
From what I’ve heard he is under threat. It’s a good documentary and worth a watch.
Pinging self for later viewing.
In school, kids generally HATE to study history, and who wouldn’t, when history is presented as dry names and dates.
I invite you all to read Tom Holland’s books; he makes history come alive.
Another Brit who’s likewise a great and “can’t put his books down” writer is Adrian Goldsworthy.

Thanks for posting this. Holland’s “In the Shadow of the Sword” is worth a read, though it is a long slog by design, to fully set the stage. The linked YouTube gets right to the point, and I recommend it to those who want a digested version.
My question: If spreading Islam, in essence even if it was evolving as a set of practices, was the purpose behind the Arab Conquest, why is it that the Arab’s made little attempt to encourage conversion, and seemed to almost discourage it?
If Jesus was the son of God then Mohamed was the son of Satan.
In July 2015, Holland appeared on the current affairs television programme This Week arguing why he thought it was incorrect of David Cameron to say that Islamic State are not Islamic.[17]
We made him strong in the land and gave him unto every thing a road. And he followed a road Till-—— WAIT , He didn’t build that road. -AHOLE OBAMA.
