Eating people is wrong, but is it against the law?
Guardian ^ | 12/16/15 | Homa Khaleeli

Has José Salvador Alvarenga been reaching for the fava beans and chianti? The 36-year-old sailor survived at sea for more than a year after being cast adrift by a storm. But now the family of his fellow sailor, 22-year-old Ezequiel Córdoba, say the older man turned cannibal to survive. Alvarenga insists Córdoba died because he could not stomach the raw birds and turtle blood that were their only source of food. But Córdoba’s family are suing the Salvadorian fisherman for $1m for eating their relative.

Ew.

There are rules/laws about the handling of dead bodies.

So the family would rather they both be dead? But if they can’t have that they’ll settle for a million bucks. Nice folks.

Yeah, dump ‘em in the ocean and let the sharks eat them. That’s so much better.

I understand what you are saying. I hope I never face that choice. If I do, I hope I choose death. Yes, I hope I let the sharks eat the dead guy first. I gotta go sometime. There are some costs for life that are just too high to pay.

Still, I should withhold criticism. It was life or death.

Flanders & Swann!

My parents loved them. I grew up listening to their albums and received one for my birthday one year (I think I was 9 — a collection (bestiary) of amusing songs about animals).

That sort of culture seems to be dead these days. No more wit in the world.

“As a naval officer I abhor the implication that the Royal Navy is a haven for cannibalism. It is well known that we have the problem relatively under control, and that it is the R.A.F. who now suffer the largest casualties in this area. And what do you think the Argylls ate in Aden? Arabs? Yours etc. Captain B.J. Smethwick in a white wine sauce with shallots, mushrooms and garlic.”

I can’t even imagine what it would be like to endure a year adrift at sea. I think most people would just give up the will to live. Just shows how strong our survival instinct can be.

Why is it wrong to eat people?

That’s just an insensitive, discriminatory and intolerant view. Just what we have come to expect out of a patriarchal white privileged society.

“There are rules/laws about the handling of dead bodies.”

This was in international waters but just for fun I looked up Florida law. This is the closest I could get to the situation. Perhaps obtaining vital nutrients would be considered bona fide medical purpose?

(2) A person who mutilates, commits sexual abuse upon, or otherwise grossly abuses a dead human body commits a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084. Any act done for a bona fide medical purpose or for any other lawful purpose does not under any circumstance constitute a violation of this section.

I thought this was going to be “If eating people is wrong then I don’t want to be right”.
