Why Donald Trump chose Corey Stewart to chair his Virginia campaign

Donald Trump and Corey A. Stewart had never met before the front-runner for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination held a rally in Manassas early this month. But people who know the longtime chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors say it makes perfect sense that Trump tapped him this week to chair his Virginia campaign.

Like Trump, Stewart is a blunt and outspoken Republican advocate of cracking down on illegal immigration. A local law he championed that allows county police to check the immigration status of anyone they arrest made him a pariah to liberal Democrats and advocacy groups, especially after Virginia officials approved a statewide law with the same provisions a year later.

Stewart--who last month was elected to a third term--has been unapologetic.

"There's some obvious similarities between the two," said Geoffrey Skelley, associate editor of the University of Virginia Center for Politics' Crystal Ball newsletter. "The overall hard-line position on illegal immigration--that definitely jibes."

*snip*

Stewart said he was taken aback by the size and enthusiasm of the crowd at the rally at the Prince William County Fairgrounds. "I haven't seen that much excitement for a Republican candidate ever, not in my political lifetime at least"...

If Trump didn’t mean what he says on illegals, he would not be hiring people like Stewart or consulting with Sen. Jeff Sessions.

These inside the beltway crowd people and pundits just don’t get it, some people actually mean what they say and back it up with actions. One look at the late in the evening spending bill approved the other night is an example of how that place operates: tell the people what they want to hear and they never question what you say or do.

I hate to say this, but a 5 megaton urban and people removal process is drastically needed in DC.

Corey Stewart is scum. He may have done the right thing on illegals, but he is in the pocket of the developers, and does not care one bit about his constituents.

The definition of a crony capitalist, and a (albeit probably a non-fatal one) mistake for Trump.

I don’t know the guy but what is important is that he gets results. The campaign chairman is mostly not seen and simply organizes the staff into doing productive work. It really doesn’t make any difference what his stance or relationship to “crony capitalism” is.

That is probably true. But the problem is that Corey Stewart is intensely disliked by many, if not most, conservative voters in PW county, and the association itself will be remembered. This guy even pulled a mini-Murkowski to get the developers’ crony to supplant the Republican candidate, for a critical Supervisor’s seat. Fortunately, the Republican (a wonderful woman) won the three way race in a landslide. Probably because we had no Eskimos. But that is the kind of snake Stewart is. The only reason Stewart wins is because the county is sharply divided into conservative, mixed, and leech territory, and he is not seriously opposed.
