One threat to L.A. and New York school districts, two very different responses
CNN ^ | 12/15/2015 | By Greg Botelho

The United States' two biggest school districts get the same threat.

One -- in Los Angeles -- decides to call off school, with the superintendent saying students won't go back until he's absolutely sure everything is safe.

The other -- in New York -- decides just the opposite, dismissing the threat as an apparent "hoax."

So which one did the right thing?

There's no easy answer. It depends partly on timing, given that Los Angeles authorities acted just before classes began on Tuesday, while the New Yorkers' comments didn't come until midday. And location matters: Los Angeles is just 60 miles from San Bernardino, where 14 people died about two weeks ago in what authorities called a terrorist attack.

So, too, does the perspective of individual students and parents -- some of whom might think calling off class is an overreaction, while others think doing anything other than that would be irresponsible.

David Katz, a former special agent for the Drug Enforcement Agency, told CNN that New York made the right call and Ramon Cortines, the Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent, made "a big mistake."

"You do not under any circumstance take action unless the threat is corroborated," Katz said. "For example, if a high-rise office building gets a bomb threat in New York City, the police department is not going to come over and evacuate your building absent some credible information."

Katz said Cortines should not have been the one to make the decision to shut down schools.

Well, the first news reports cited the threat as “credible”

So what was it? If “credible” who determined that? And if so, then I think LAUSD did the right thing. And NY did not.

But I’m inclined to think it wasn’t “credible” and NY reacted accordingly. So why can’t anyone get anything right anymore?

Rhetorical Question

Folks are on edge these days. I don’t fault either school system.

Let me ask this, what if 150 kids had died today in New York?

If it looks credible to someone, then they need to play it safe.

Both Democrat strongholds-the media wouldn’t have any problem at all deciding who made the wrong call if one of them had been a Republican stronghold.

Ramon Cortines was a “one man band” this morning. He did all of this seemingly with out consultation with law enforcement. He had no LEO’s around him at his first press conference and he was using the word “I” repeatedly. Just another Barak Obama who thinks he’s omnicient. What a putz!

Gee I wonder how they figured out it was a hoax..maybe it was the “I am a Muslim extremist” in the email LOL yeah like ISIS would email that..ISIS just does it, they don’t give any warning, like with San Bernardino, no warning, it just happened. I don’t blame the school district for being cautious if there had been multiple suicide bombings today with hundreds of dead kids the media would have said how come the schools were not shut down. This is why you need armed guards at school, the schools stay open and the kids remain safe

They need to keep Obama from sending out email.

Fast and Furious to gin up gun law hysteria, and now this?

Would not put it past this government.

“Ramon’s fingerprints are all over education in this state.”

As a Northern Californian, I sure hope that the way may be found to excise everything south of the Angeles Crest setting it “free” to fester into a full-blown Mexico City Del Norte. The RATs and their Mexican hordes, have turned a once-beautiful area into a steaming South American $hit hole! Hollywood and it’s surrounding enclaves will need a wall and a moat before long.

Richard Fernandez at Belmont Club correctly called it -

In it's own way the school decision to shut is a vote of no-confidence in the administration's ability to protect vs terrorism. As the saying goes, to the question has Obama done enough to safeguard America, "your lips say yes, but your eyes say no." (emphasis mine)

I guess I get why LA overreacted, but it seemed obviously to be a hoax.

If it were a tip from someone claiming to want to stop the attacks, it would be a bit more credible.

But, why would real terrorists plan these massive, complicatex and expensive attacks but then tip off the schools?

People don’t have to be killed to cause panic. Plus it keeps us off balance.

I agree. But it still makes no sense that a Jihadist would warn the victims. It’s not like they threatened to blow up some landmark, but didn’t want to kill people. The plot described in the email would have been designed to kill as many people as possible. It makes no sense to send in a warning for that type of attack.

Good question. Maybe fear is more important to them than the actual act.

For example, the actual physical damage during 9/11 was relatively small when compared to the thousands of cities and building in the United States. Two buildings and a few planes, were small in comparison to the trillions of dollars that it cost the United States in two wars and the fear that it generated.

Please don’t get me wrong — I am not saying that 9/11 was insignificant. Just trying to explain how terrorists operate.
