The Australian Military has bolstered its military surveillance over the South China Sea amid mounting tensions surrounding ownership of the region.
An RAAF P-3 Orion aircraft was detected patrolling the area by the BBC, who picked up an Australian official telling the Chinese navy via radio communications that the plane was 'exercising international freedom of navigation rights.'
'China navy China navy we are an Australian aircraft exercising international freedom of navigation rights, in international airspace in accordance with the international civil aviation convention, and the united nations convention of the law of the sea - over,' the message said.
The Department of Defence said the patrol was part of their routine in an ongoing bid to ensure stability is upheld across the South China Sea.
Experts believe the incident is a signal that Australia rejects China's claims of territory in the area, which is also disputed by Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam.

It's not impossible, but I don't think it's likely. There are people whose views I respect who do think it's more likely than I do.
The media is the biggest issue - there are just too many in the media who have a visceral hatred for Abbott and who are willing to lie to smear him. And too many voters who are willing to believe the lies.
when you have a geographic ares with legitimate claims by four nations at once, that is almost entirely navigable waters in the middle of an ocean, that seems to be the textbook definition of “international”
