The U.S. Navyâs newest littoral combat ship had to be towed into port last week after losing propulsion off the coast of Virginia.
A statement from the U.S. Navy said the ship, USS Milwaukee (LCS 5), was en-route to a naval base in Little Creek when it lost propulsion Thursday night while approximately 40 nautical miles off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia.
The USNS Grapple (T-ARS 53) was sent to retrieve the vessel and tow it to the Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) at Little Creek-Fort Story, where they arrived at approximately 9 p.m. EST on Friday.

I posted a different thread about this the other night.

The USS Zumwalt also on sea trials assisted in a rescue the same day.
Get the muslim NASA guys to help fix it.
And no one with skills to get it going?.....sweet.
Maybe they should turn it on and off a couple times.
Works in an F16 (not really joking).
This has been posted twice today.
Everything funded by tax-payers is warrantied for eternity.
Metal shavings blocked the oil filter. Apparently, the oil filter isn’t a user-serviceable part.
How do you lose propulsion on a military ship that must have twin screws and backup?
This was the rescue topic that had to be posted after the first topic broke down and had to be towed to port after one of the keyboard keys got stuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
The previous Milwaukee was a replenishment ship.
The 2 LCS classes, Freedom and Independence, are not electric, gas turbines run waterjet drives.
The new USS Zumwalt’s screws are turned by electric motors, but the power comes from gas turbines.
All 3 class’ gas turbines are variants of RR or GE aircraft engines - 777, 747, 767, C-5, et al.
...better not use this contractor the next moon shot...
Lost one turbine, shut it down and locked the shaft.
Proceeded forth slowly.
Then same issue with the other turbine.
Interesting. Wonder if it is the turbine itself or the drive train.
Designed by the same company that botched the Hubble space telescope when they didn’t know the difference between metric and British measurements.
Fancy high tech propulsion system, dragged home by good old Cat diesels.
Embarrassing, but not as much as the “divide by zero” error that stopped on new Navy ship in its tracks some years back.
It’s solar powered and, well, you know, it gets dark at night.
The Russians and the Chinese are resting easy tonight... and probably with a smirk.
