Iranian troops retreating from Syria, Western officials say

Special to WorldTribune.com

With scant few battlefield victories and the deaths of key military leaders, Iran appears ready to cut its losses and withdraw from Syria, Western officials say.

The failed Russian-initiated offensive to retake Idlib province from anti-Assad rebels supported by the West and Gulf Arab states has led to the retreat of large numbers of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) troops, officials say.

Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon said at the recent Saban Forum in Washington that Russia had planned to seize Idlib and other rebel-controlled areas within three months. "It's not going to happen because of the military difficulties," he said, adding that the Idlib offensive looked to be a "failure."

Ya'alon attributed the failed offensive to the "incompetence" of Syria's army and "the lack of determination of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps."

This past summer, Iran seemed intent on helping Russia preserve the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose forces had suffered heavy casualties while losing territory to a coalition of rebels supported by the United States, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and others, Western analysts said.

According to Haaretz, Hezbollah's is not doing well either:
Hezbollah's losses since the summer of 2012, when it began direct involvement in the Syrian civil war, total more than 1,300 killed and 5,000 wounded. This is high considering that probably no more than 30,000 men are serving, including reserves.

IRGC and Hezbollah used to be known for their fanatic zeal. What happened?

The attrition may be more than Iran is willing to pay. And remember a couple of days ago the Russians basically told Israel they had free range on Hezbollah. A bizarre assembly of players.

And, who knows how true the story is?

I’m suspicious of anything those folks do.

If the Iranians are retreating, something is up.

I wonder if they’re not ready to try something on the Syrians and don’t want their own soldiers to get caught in the fallout, so to speak.

I don’t trust them as far as I can throw them.

Apart from the odd terrorist attack Hezbollah has always fought on the defensive against Israel. In Syria they are having to go on the attack in open country, That is the kind of warfare that tends to turn on logistics, not zeal.

As for the Iranians, it's been 25 years since they fought a war.

If the Iranians are retreating, something is up.

A flesh-eating disease is sweeping across Syria, and ISIS is partly to blame

Defeat?

They're probably gonna Rachell Corrie the place, and don't feel like turning their troops into Aunt Jemimah mix.

They probably all want to rush home to get their cut of Barry and Hanoi Johnny’s “deal” money that Iran got.

“Iranian troops retreating from Syria, Western officials say”

The most logical reason for them to be removing troops from Syria is that Turkey is moving troops into Iraq. Those troops leaving Syria are probably moving into Shia controlled areas of Iraq and to the Iranian border with Iraq.
