Coat of Many Colors re-creates Dolly Parton's Tennessee childhood
Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette ^ | December 10, 2015 | Michael Storey

If you only watch one heart-warming, warm-and-fuzzy, inspirational, feel-good holiday movie this season, make it this one.

Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors airs at 8 p.m. today on NBC and continues the tradition established by such country-themed bio-pics as Walk the Line (Johnny Cash) and Coal Miner's Daughter (Loretta Lynn).

Whereas those films took a broader perspective on the lives of their country legends, this offering concentrates on a seminal period in young Dolly's life -- her hardscrabble but loving childhood in rural Tennessee that inspired the famous hit song from which the movie takes it name.

Many viewers will be familiar with Parton's 1971 song and its poignant lyrics that end:

Now I know we had no money

But I was rich as I could be

In my coat of many colors

My momma made for me.

The TV movie aired earlier this evening. Perhaps you can catch it on rerun or Netflix or something. I live in East Tennessee. I can't or won't defend everything that Dolly Parton has said or done. But I will say two things: 1. She is loved in East Tennessee, and 2. She has, without any shadow of a doubt, done more for education in this country than has the entire Department of Education. (If you are uninformed about the latter claim, don't just believe me. Look up "Imagination Library".)

She is dedicated to providing jobs for Sevier County, TN also. The Whole Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge things would not be what is it without Dolly.

I am no fan of Dolly but I will give her this:

She is the real thing, she really did experience the poverty and life of the area.

She really is talented.

I remember first seeing her on the Porter Wagoner Show back in the 60’s - terrific.

It was a beautifully done movie and so heartwarming to see her depicted as a child, I almost missed it just roaming through the channels and happened on it.

Dolly is a beautiful lady and beautiful to the bone. I got tickled when she as putting on that lipstick. Heard her say one time that when she was a little girl she would see the night ladies (so to speak) and loved how they dressed so gaudy, she liked gaudy, those were her words. lol I think that is why that scene was put in.

Dolly has added grocery stores to her portfolio by purchasing the Piggly Wiggly, Big Apple and Harris Teeter chains.

They will now be known as Big Wiggly Teeters.

I saw the movie and loved it.

I have nothing but respect for Dolly Parton.

She says the key to her success was that she didn’t know she wasn’t supposed to accomplish her dreams. She said she was too dumb to know better.

I know nothing of her personal life or beliefs but what she has accomplished and what she has given back are pretty remarkable.

Dolly on Hee-Haw was precious. Introduced and produced by the great Porter Wagner.

That song always makes me cloud up. I don’t rain over it like I used to but I sure do get close to it.
