WASHINGTON, Dec 9 (Reuters) - U.S. taxpayers could be left with multibillion-dollar liabilities if large coal companies are pushed to bankruptcy, the Interior Department Secretary said on Wednesday.

At issue is a practice known as self-bonding, allowed under a decades-old mining program, in which some of the country's biggest coal companies forego insurance on a portion of future mine cleanup costs.

The Obama Administration is alarmed, but offered no plans to protect taxpayers.

What exactly did they expect to happen if they drive these companies out of business? These guys are beyond incompetent; they are malevolent!

There are only a few coal companies still in business.

The clowns need to back off! Coal is one of the best cheapest forms of energy we have. We are killing ourselves to chase a retarded green dream.

They had good intentions so that’s all that counts.

Another case of unintended consequences.

These guys are beyond incompetent; they are malevolent!

Don't worry. The EPA knows how to clean up old mines in an environmentally safe manner.

Obama is just keeping a campaign promise to bankrupt the coal industry.

Obama is just keeping a campaign promise to bankrupt the coal industry.

The deeming of CO2 as a pollutant caused untold waste. And it had to be done right away, pronto, before people realized what they were doing.

Obama is President Trainwreck.

We all exhale CO2, so we’re all criminals.

But pardon my ignorance, what exactly needs to be cleaned up after a coal mine?

I assume this refers to strip mining - is it enough to just put soil on top? I’m guessing no.

I remember Copper Hill Tennessee, and the Haile Gold Mine, SC as a teenager (65 now). Before reclamation. Red hills, Red pools of water, grew about as much vegetation as face of the moon. After reclamation, they are grassy meadows.

I presume reclamation mainly means smoothing strip mined landscape and planting that which will grow.

Strip mining is an ugly business, regardless.
