If I remember correctly, any one of them here on student visas and working/training with our military were sent home immediately.

Yes and a bunch of the protesters we sent back were later killed by the new government they helped create.

This fits the term ‘racist’ better than what Trump proposes.

It certainly makes sense. Iran was actively attacking Americans and their interests. I wonder how many American business men had major investments in Iran at the time Carter banned Iranian immigrants. Would it have been legitimate for them to keep running these business? I don’t think it would have been any different than having a business in Nazi Germany.

I don’t know how extensive that ban was. I went to prep school in CT at that time, and we were about 5% Iranian (they often referred to themselves as Persian) from VERY rich families. A couple were stand-up guys. A plurality of the males were hash-head American haters and worthless. The girls were generally cute, dressed well but not according to strict Muslim standards. They were all pretty secular secular. Some were EXTREMELY anti-black.

Shortly before graduation when I was a junior, a black senior who was slated for Georgetown decided to get revenge on a hashhead who had been giving him a hard time all year (including painting nigger on his door, FOR REAL).He used a baseball bat.

Bernie Sanders aside, I doubt any candidate wants to be compared to Jimmy Carter. I'd go with FDR, he stuck it to all kinds of people, including citizens. That said, Trump's approach to the problem could have been a bit more diplomatic. As the article notes, previous bans have been on geographic origin or hostile ideology. A halt until we've sorted these things out would make a great deal of sense.

Jimmy did it by state, not by religion. At least to some that is a significant difference.

Ah, the Jimmy Carter. Back when even the worst president was someone who loved his country, and took his job seriously.

CARTER BANNED IRANIANS FROM COMING TO US DURING HOSTAGE CRISIS

Now we have [Acting] Pres Valerie Jarrett and Huma Abedin, Hillary's squeeze, with full access to the highest secrets and calling the shots for the US. I guess Iran has no need to recruit spies to gather intel on us.

Rephrased slightly: Jimmy did it by tagging a group with certain identifying characteristics, traits or attitudes, that were a threat to the security of the U.S. In addition, it has been argued that islam is a political movement--not a religion--and therefore the equivalent of a state. Isn't that what a Caliphate is?

The article says if they opposed the Iranian regime they could come here. Equivalent now would be if they opposed Shariah they could still come.
