Despite the spike in mass shootings in recent years, gun crime in America is actually decreasing overall, a Washington Post story notes, listing some of the reasons.
The Post cites a Pew Research Center study showing 7 deaths by firearm for every 100,000 Americans in 1993, but by 2013, that rate had been cut to 3.6 per 100,000.
Some of the reasons cited by the Post include:
* More police on the streets.
* Police use of computers to pinpoint areas where more patrols are needed.
* Decreased alcohol use.
* Less lead in the air from gasoline after passage of the Clean Air Act in 1970. (Though many researchers question claims of a 56 percent drop in violent crime as a result of unleaded gasoline.)

I suspect there has not been a decrease of lead in the air in Chicago on any given night. I suspect that there may actually have been an increase.
Fewer peoples shooting = less lead in the air.
Fewer but more concentrated are not mutually exclusive.
I didn’t think that lead floated well, even in particulate.
Most of the lead in gas went to the surface of the valves, which is why it was added.
Only after better metals could we get away without leaded gas.
At least, that’s how I recollect it.
The media loves Gun Free Zones which provide risk free areas for mentally ill gunmen to create havoc...and news.
Interesting that there is no mention of more criminals in jail and/or more people owning firearms for their own protection.
Ditto to post #8.
Back to the top, regarding this whole thread.
On post #7,could this really be TRUE (about MSM)? If so, these people are acting as, uh, animals.
“Gun Crimes Plunge Over Last Two Decades Despite Increase in Gun Sales”
Well, duh. Not all criminals are terminally stupid: more armed marks means less easy pickins!
It would be interesting to know exactly how many people are actually “carrying concealed” when out in public.
How many would you guess? 1 in 10, 50, 100, 300, etc.
Any REAL, TRUTHFUL statistics out there?
Gun owner ship has to be way up.
Less lead in the air helps decrease the murder rate?? How about no lead in paint, will that help reduce murder rates, too.
We were in IKEA yesterday and I had my gun concealed and wife had hers in her purse. IKEA said it was a gun free zone, but they didn’t know we had guns with us...

I don’t know of any real research, but ballpark cyphering can be done. VA has about 400,000 CHP holders, with an adult population of about 4,000,000. Taking into account that not every one of us carries all the time, most carriers are men, and northern Virginia is bluer(although with more security-related employees), I’d figure about 1:15 - 1:25 men are armed here in northern Virginia. Anecdotal observations of sloppily concealed weapons at WalMart back my guess up.
