WILDWOOD ⢠Call it a case of cabin fever.
A historic log cabin in Wildwood has gone missing, and St. Louis County Police are investigating.
Sometime between Nov. 24 and 29, someone disassembled and carted off the pieces of the cabin off Highway 109 just south of Eatherton Road in Wildwood. The family who owned it had planned to donate the cabin to the city for use as a historic attraction.
St. Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman said the cabin could barely be seen from the highway.
"Itâs pretty secluded, where, if nobodyâs paying attention, you can probably get a big truck in there and do all this," he said. "Youâre not talking about a pickup truck moving it."
Schellman said several people had to be involved, and police said this appeared to be a theft rather than a misunderstanding.
The cabin was built in the 1870s and was built by the Essen family. Two sisters who own about 250 acres where the cabin stood were in an agreement to donate it to the city. It was estimated in the police report to be worth about $50,000.

"...HEY!..the logs were mine first"
A member of the family was not please with the donation idea.
You can’t recreate old wood.
There is a house not too far from me that the owners wanted it to look like it had been there for 150 years.
Old wood was used.
I have a bunch of old, reclaimed fir in my house. It’s great looking and more structurally sound than new wood. I purchased it from a local company that specializes in this type of wood. My wood does NOT look old, it’s S4S.
The man I bought the wood from did the frame, siding and porch for the above mentioned house.
When it was finished - just the exterior mind you, no electrical or interior trim - it looked like an old 1,500 sq. foot house with a porch.
The cost of just that was $1.8 million.
Old wood has value...
At least it wasn’t burned down - that’s the ‘motis operandi’ of builder’s where I live - Building Hugger
Bet the guy who stole it was named Chuck.
Somebody thought it was free firewood.
I suspect that is a marmot, AKA rockchuck; not a woodchuck.
And it is not chucking any wood!
Specifically Woody Chuck:
How much wood could a wood chuck, chuck, if a wood chuck could chuck wood.
Where were those WV barn guys (Barnwood Builders) that I see on the DIY cable TV channel during that period of time (November 24th through 29th)?
They better have alibis.
Er, um woodchucks can chuck wood. I saw them do it in a TV commercial.

I don’t know how many times I told them to keep a leash on it, but would they listen? Oh heck no!
