Based on preliminary reports these rifles were probably neither legally sold (straw purchaser) nor legal to possess in California, having magazines (of cartridges!) of over a capacity of 10. In short, these murderers were...gasp!...criminals! Which should pretty much put to rest the fantasy that another law will stop this sort of thing.
I have read that two of the guns may have been purchased legally...but by somebody other than these two. That is a straw purchase - in CA, even private sales have to be facilitated by a dealer. Broken law #1.

And yes, the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution protects an individual's right to own a gun. That's not going to change no matter how much you legislate and spin. So, how about you read up on gun control and then write your article. The NRA has lots of literature on it. I'm sure they would help you out. .
