onald Trump sided with Marco Rubio over Ted Cruz in a debate over U.S. government surveillance, saying he would "err on the side of security."
The Republican presidential front-runner on Tuesday told radio host Hugh Hewitt that he would support the reauthorization of U.S. bulk collection and storage of phone metadata.
"I assume that when I pick up my telephone, people are listening to my conversations anyway, if you want to know the truth. It's pretty sad commentary," Trump said. "But I err on the side of security."
The National Security Agency on Sunday ended its bulk phone metadata collection, shifting to a more targeted approach two years after Edward Snowden's leaks revealed the extent of the September 11-era program. Its end has brought the issue to the forefront of the 2016 presidential campaign.
Rubio, a Florida senator, and Cruz, a Texas senator, have sparred over that issue in recent days. Cruz supported the bill that ended the government's metadata collection program -- a vote that a pro-Rubio group highlighted, casting it as weakening national security, in a new television advertisement in Iowa.
Trump said his support for security measures predates the ISIS attacks on Paris.
"When you have the world looking at us and would like to destroy us as quickly as possible, I err on the side of security," he said. "And, so, you know, that's the way it is. That's the way I've been, and some people like that, frankly, and some people don't like that."

He can kill Rubio at will...but Cruz is smarter than Rubio by a light-year.
Sorry to waste your valuable time.
If this helps Trump and hurts Cruz then the country is in deep trouble. Hard to fix the country if a majority is happy to see it burn.
My preference is to be able to get on an airplane or go to a nightclub WITHOUT being killed. At this point, and until Trump is able to clean things up a bit, the ONLY WAY that will be possible is if our government spies on terrorists.
He who would give up liberty for security deserves neither.
My time is an investment in my friends.
What is your investment?
Do you think I and others do this for ego?
Wouldn't you be safer if there was a policeman on every corner checking your papers?
This is not about the government spying on terrorists. Everyone on the republican side agrees with that. This debate is about whether the government should collect everyone’s phone records including those with no ties at all to terrorism.

Do you really think that those spooks are deterred by any law. What they are doing now they have always done, only now, better.

He who will not give a statement on amnesty means a country without borders.
“We welcome change and openness, but we believe that freedom and security go together”- Reagan
Trump is a Cruz supporter, but Trump still has to win, doesn't he.
That said, the Left and the GOPe must burn. They are killing this country and the only answer is that they must die (politically speaking of course).
I dont know how one can do a search that will guarantee that no other atricle realting to the same topic ha been posted
stories are very often published by various outlets using widely divergent HEADLINES.
barring some miracle how would one FIND such threads without doing a several minute search for similar material by browsing though threads posted in the last few hours??
oh well
Like you say, it’s about collecting information...not the same. Other than one’s name, it’s not always easy to identify a terrorist, so I’d rather they have the data to go back to when they need it.
The NSA can still get the records from the phone companies - they just have to make a showing to a judge that the records they want to review are or may be relevant to an ongoing investigation. The 4th Amendment was added to the Bill of Rights for a reason, and I don’t think trashing those protections for some non-specific “national security” claim is a conservative position.
If they could even point to a single case where collecting this data resulted in preventing a terror attack, maybe it would be worth discussing. But no one I have seen has been able to document such a case. And after what we have seen with the IRS and this “Justice” department, I am not comfortable with the Feds having any more information about me than absolutely necessary...
I know you do to.
Sorry for my harshness.
