They are trying to repeat what they did in 2008 and 2012; muzzle the opposition (in those cases by painting anyone opposing Obama as racist). They want to beat Trump’s supporters back into the closet to destroy the public images of his popularity (the crowds).

I've never been to a Trump rally, but I've been to several TEA Party events, always with at least one of my 'little friends', and I'd never attend any large gathering unarmed.
If you have to pass through a metal detector to get in, I'm on the outside.
If I were ever going to attend a Trump rally {I'm a Cruzer so that is unlikely} I'd be armed.
The same thing holds for a Cruz rally, I'd be outside with my pals.
