The latest Russian Navy frigate, the Admiral Gorshkov (lead ship of Project 22350), has practiced launching cruise missiles against coastal and sea targets as part of its trials, Northern Fleet spokesman Captain 1st Rank Vadim Serga said on Thursday.
The first ship of the new Russian Navy frigate project 22350 class "Admiral Gorshkov" sailing out for its first sea trials in November 2014.
"The launches of various cruise missiles were conducted as part of the final stages of the shipâs armament and equipment state trials," the spokesman said.
According to Serga, the shipâs crew has already tested the cold start of the shipborne missile system and practiced launching various cruise missiles against coastal and simple and complex sea targets. The frigate will call at the Northern Fleetâs Belomorsk naval base due to an upcoming storm. When the weather is fine, the frigate will continue the state trials of its armament and equipment in the White Sea, the spokesman added.
The frigate Admiral Gorshkov is armed with two 3S-14 vertical launchers with eight missiles each of the Kalibr system. The missile load comprises 3M-14 (NATO reporting name: SS-N-30) missiles to attack ground targets and 3M-54 (SS-N-27) anti-ship missiles.
The Project 22350 frigate is designed to fight surface warships and submarines in the ocean and at sea and repel air attacks both independently and within a formation. The Project 22350 frigate is flush-decked and has three-island superstructures, a tower mast and a steel tube. The ship has a lower radar signature, which makes it virtually invisible for the enemyâs radars. The Project 22350 frigate has a displacement of about 4,550 tons and a length of 135 meters. The capacity of its diesel-gas-turbine power plant is 65,000 hp.
The ship is armed with the new A-192 130mm artillery gun and anti-ship, antisubmarine and air defense missile systems, including the Kalibr and Redut-Poliment. The ship is capable of carrying the Kamov Ka-27 (NATO reporting name: Helix) helicopter or its versions.
If the Russians stand with the French, then I’m with them. What a crazy world.

Why practice? Fire for effect!
Meanwhile, the US cranked out the dimly armed LCS jokes that look like the offspring of a container ship and tugboat.
At least some of the new stuff looks like it had some imagination and style behind it.
Impresses the heck out of me !
Certainly a better concept than the 57 mm pop-guns and .50 cal on the LCS/Frigates of the USNavy.
Cover for the French aircraft carrier.
LCS (Little Crappy Ships)
Or Landing Craft (Small). Since L designates a landing craft.
They are calling them Frigates now, although Corvette might be a more appropriate designation.
I’m thinking Lousy Container Ships.
I like to call them “Dock Queens” because they mostly are tied up at the pier because of maintenance issues and poor design.
What went wrong with the LCS? How can a far smaller craft be more potent? Was it just the result of a wrong ask (for instance, the requirement for high speed leaching all other needs), or something more nefarious? The LCS is a shame considering how other smaller craft can be more capable, and the high dash speed of the LCS doesn’t make any sense in the first place.
It is a strictly limited brown-water navy craft that had its ask modified several times, suffered massive mission creep and was chosen as an unsuitable replacement for blue-water ships based on wishful thinking and blue-sky manufacturer claims.
