Russia's foreign ministry on Thursday urged nationals currently in Turkey to return home after tensions with Ankara soared over the downing of a Russian warplane. "In connection with the existing terrorist threats on Turkish territory, we once again recommend that Russian citizens refrain from visiting Turkey, and recommend that Russians who are there for personal purposes return home," the foreign ministry said in a statement. The statement follows recent calls by Moscow for Russians not to travel to Turkey.

This sort of warning is sometimes a prelude to war.

Perceptive remark.

Yes, the Kurds are going to do well out of this.

We may be able to visit Constantinople and worship in Hagia Sophia in our lifetime.

This is not good. Turkey is part of NATO. We are obligated by treaty to defend them if they are attacked.

Due to Obama’s feckless nature, Putin may believe this is a good time to show NATO as a paper tiger. He likely believes that the U.S. will back down, and he may be right.

On the other hand, President Obama may feel a need to “side with the Muslims”. He may feel a greater loyalty to Turkey and the Muslim population than to Russia.

After all, Russia is no longer the Soviet Union, who he was taught to believe was the greatest good in the world, by his family and mentors; it is now a Christian nation.

Yeah, well, Turkey was obligated to provide their airspace and bases during the Iraq War and they didn't.

Turkey is now claiming that they didn’t know the fighter was Russian. It will be interesting to see what Putin can extract from Turkey in exchange for not leveling the country.

Sadly, the easiest option for Turkey is to shut down our huge air base there.

Russian tourists make up at least half of the visitors to Antalya and the coastal resorts.
Sadly, this will only isolate Turkey more...

“We are obligated by treaty to defend them if they are attacked.”

No we aren’t. We are obligated to “take whatever measures we deem necessary”. And I oppose one American life being wasted for a fight Turkey started. I think they are prime movers in this entire Syrian war.

Putin may be calculating that NATO won’t back up Turkey if he attacks and that ends NATO and independence for East Europe.

"And Putin was asked what he was having for Thanksgiving and he replied: Turkey."

Perhaps it is time for the secular Turkish military to follow Egypts' example and remove the Jihadist Erdogan from office.

This isn’t Ataturk’s Turkey .
Turkey is behind ISIS and is an enemy to freedom.
