The link bekow and left of the gcaptain vid dated 2012 shows the loss of 208,000 pounds of anchor and chain by the USS Tarawa. Worth looking at.
I would have the second it started spooling....
Best part is the cameraman stays with it until the obvious outcome, as the chain finally snaps....
Anchors away my friend...
LOL
Haven’t seen Internet Cowboy in a few years...
“5 feet high and rising”....
Oooops.
Is gravity really a law - or does the Earth just suck?
Diver shackles a wire to the bitter end and it gets winched up. Usually by a barge crane.
Bearings are good, it’s the brake that needs rebuilding.
Have run across more than one neglected for long duration, which built up a thick rust layer next to the brake band. Binding occurs upon release preventing a free run, and once broken free will not provide any holding ability.
Would engage the windlass and power feed the chain out and back into the chain locker, amongst other remedies to make serviceable.
Did anyone notice the smurfs behind the pennant line on both sides of the deck? USCG observing equipment operation?
Figured, the lift bag comment was a joke. The end of the chain may be fun to find if the bottom is nasty...........
Lost the windlass motor once, but had sufficient run of heavy line aboard to set a buoy before cutting the chain free, forward of the windlass. To recover, fished line through chain pipe back to capstan and winched chain into place. Re-attached with shot coupling link at cut point. Worked in 250 feet water dropping 9 shot.
Post of the Day
Salvage companies are capable of retrieving them.
...
The ones I saw were either clueless or running for cover.
Those were the smart ones - why die or lose body parts trying to stop an unstoppable force?
I’d hate to see that happen on an aircraft carrier. The anchor weighs 20 tons and EACH chain link is 250 pounds.
I did bring up a 400# old fashioned anchor by buddy breathing into two 55 gal. drums once.
I can imagine that emptied a few tanks of air...................
That’s scary. Thanks.
