Following the downing of a Russian jet by the Turkish Air Force this morning, all eyes are on Turkey.

It should come as no surprise that Turkey was capable of taking out a Russian jet so easily. Turkey's military uses cutting-edge equipment, including some bought in from the US and a surprising amount it builds at home.

Here is some of the military hardware used by Turkey:

Turkey a threat to the Red Bear? I doubt that seriously.

Equipment is only the first factor. The Turks might get a rude awakening.

They used an F-16. Are we supposed to be impressed that they have an F-16? I’d be saving up for an F-16 except the stupid BATFE won’t let me have one. Turkey’s arms are way to short to wrestle with the bear.

What do you think of this theory on Putin strategy?

1. Putin lets a back door to an ISIS terrorist attack against Crimea.
2. Partial blames Turkey for incident.
3. Bombs the crap outa Turkey and ISIS-Syria.
4. Middle East becomes a smoldering crater.

Isn't BI the Democrat mouthpiece? If they truly understood business, they would know that Turkey has more to lose than Russia.

If the Russians stop vacationing in Antalya...who will go there?

The Su-24 is a bomber so it is no surprise that a fighter jet shot it down so easily. Waiting to see how the F-16 does against ship to air missiles.

The Russians are no doubt terrified that if this escalates they will have to answer to Obama.

NATO. Turkey's a member, has been quite active and is very friendly with several western European countries.

Well that kinda works for me. Is Mecca and Medina included in that smoldering crater Middle East?

I always thought that after 9/11 the Middle East should have become the largest glass facility in the world.

Watch what happens when Turkey closes the bosphorous straits. Russia will huff and puff and nothing will happen. Hopefully they learn where to fly their planes...

Click the link and look at the photos and captions. It's hard to believe the author is even remotely serious. Turkey has only two assets that can give the Russians any reason to pause: their very large and well trained army, and their control of the Bosphorus strait.

Turkey has been supporting ISIS for a long time. It probably would be efficient for Putin to find some way to get them not to. Turkey is in NATO. So, what if Putin uses this or some other incident as an excuse to hit ISIS resupply, training, etc targets in Turkey? Then what does NATO do about that. Do we really go to war with Russia to support ISIS? Pretty cool game of chicken.

I don't know about that. My bet is that in that particular neighborhood the correlation of forces would be quite adverse to the Russians.

This is Turkey's front yard.

And it's a long, long way to the Russian frontiers.

Ivan may have superior forces overall, but they're operating at the end of a very long tail, with little experience executing these sorts of military adventures.
