NATO ambassadors called on Ankara to show "cool-headedness" on Tuesday following an emergency meeting in Brussels, after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane near the Syrian border, diplomats said.

Diplomats present at the meeting told Reuters that while none of the 28 NATO envoys defended Russia's actions, many expressed concern that Turkey did not escort the Russian warplane out of its airspace

A little late now.

The United States believes Russia’s incursion into Turkish airspace on Tuesday likely lasted only a matter of seconds before Turkey shot down a Russian warplane, a U.S. official said, saying the assessment was based on preliminary indications.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the United States was still investigating the incident.

This should be the outcome, and clear zones of operation should be agreed to deconflict actions like this.

Turkey has been warning Russia for months about this type of thing.

I'm not sure who the good guy here is in this particular incident. Putin is anti-islamist (good), but he has also been testing the resolve of the West (bad).

So if I were President, I wouldn't pick a side here. If Turkey invoked the NATO charter, I'd go fishing and get back to them later.

But if I were absolutely forced to pick a side, I'd go with Putin. He is less evil than radical islam.

That is indeed correct but...

Turkey has a lot of skin in this game that I am sure played more a part in the take down than their Sovereign status.

But we’re not forced to choose sides.

But what has the “West” been supporting, they’ve been pro-Muslim for the past 20 years.

Right. And that's why this is a go-fishing-instead moment for the United States.

Unfortunately, powerful folks, anywhere, simply won't just go fishing. They are driven to do something significant.

Maybe they should have asked Russia for restraint.

I don’t think Turkish restraint is going to be the issue.

No argument from me there. With only a few exceptions (example: Hungary), today's West is a collection of dreamers, self-haters, and idiots.

Either tonight or after Hollande’s visit to Moscow, I expect that Russia will bomb or cruise missile the Turkman area in Northern Syria.
