Depends on who’s history your read. Sure there were excesses but don’t forget, those slave were property and abusing them would hurt his field hands; secondly lots of slaves followed their masters into battle during the War of Secession.
Can you imagine if the Bahamas, Cuba, et al, never had slavery there?

The Irish slaves (which were slaves for a longer period of time) seem to have assimilated since being freed.
