Donald Trump has no more idea how he's going to deport twelve million people than John Kennedy knew how he was going to put a manned spacecraft on the moon.
But then, Kennedy was a visionary and Trump is an imbecile, right?
Also, Kennedy had his eye on elevating humanity, while Trump is trying to put the kibosh on cheap landscapers.
But still... what's he up to?
Here's what: He's controlling the architecture of the argument.
That's the way high-level business guys get what they want. He's good at it; he does it reflexively, and it's a technique he uses over and over. None of this has anything to do with compassion, or the lack of it; fairness, or the lack of it; practicality, or the lack of it. It has only to do with leverage, with controlling the argument and eventually winning it, whatever that looks like.
How then, does he do that? How does he, “control the architecture of the argument”? Simple. He does it by ruthlessly applying the core principle that every good negotiator adheres to:
Never argue about what the other guys want to argue about.
Don't even argue about what you want to argue about.
Nope. Argue about what the other guys don't want to argue about.
The reason the other guys don't want to argue about it will be because it's either uncomfortable and embarrassing, or it denies them the logical foundation for the case they are trying to make. Firmly bolting them to those noxious things is how you win. It's the way you get the other guys to cede the point, to give an inch if you need that, or a mile if it comes down to it. There's always something.

They will self deport if they want to have a chance to come back in. It’s quite simple.
The ones we are forced to deport will move to the back of the line.
It’s amazing how ‘impossible’ to do simple things are for liberals. They can ‘fundamentally transform’ our society, but think we are incapable of renting buses.
Henry Scanlon and friends need to realize - soon - that their demeaning condescension toward Trump simply diminish their voice. The headline is an insult (*gambit*), and several phrases in the text are stupid and sophomorish (kibosh on cheap landscapers is one).
This is, in a different way, the same thing that the “Dilbert” guy Scott Adams said about two months ago regarding Trump’s “verbal kill shots.” Trump cleverly just ignores the parts of the questions he doesn’t want to talk about (”do you favor a registry for Muslims”), side steps to the main issue (”Yes, I’ll build the wall”), let’s them complain that he said something he didn’t say, then gets more mileage out of it by (correctly) blaming them.
Thank you! Great article.
Trump inside their OODA loop 24/7
There is a very easy answer to all the “How are you going to do that?” questions.
I would tell the dumb reporter that there are two parts to achieving anything... one is the will, two is the way. What a president has to bring to the table is the will. The way, the how, will be determined by employing the best experts the nation has.
And the old saying is right, “where there’s a will there’s a way.”
What’s been sorely lacking in the immigration problem, in defeating ISIS, in fixing health care... has been the will.
I understand the concept, but I object to the self-righteousness of the author’s language. The only way to deal with THAT “point to be dealt with” is to point it out, with a heavy dose of ridicule, IMO.
As a deal man myself, the point in negotiation was always to destroy the existing narrative and rewrite one in which your position wins
Trump does this brilliantly over and over again, each and every day.
The other candidates are sincerely mystified at the entire operation. And the author is incorrect to assert at the end of his article that Trump's opponents can easily adopt Trump's technique against him.
Adopting Trump's technique would be akin to a rabbit developing a tiger's killing facility.
Unless you are yourself a tiger, it is an impossibility.
Trump's opponents are not tigers, but Trump...
Trump/Cruz 2016
As you and I both know and dealt with this and understand it...
The author discredited his article by the insults to Trump, so naturally we weren’t interested in what he was saying...
...this brought to you by a Trump Supporter....
Yawn. More blather from a breadgobbler/chatterer who has less value to our society than a fry cook.
“Also, Kennedy had his eye on elevating humanity, while Trump is trying to put the kibosh on cheap landscapers.”
They always have to go for the cheap shot. Never fails.
Bingo!
I love to watch the media interview Trump for this very reason.
He doesn’t let them control the conversation and it frustrates them to no end.
He hands them a rope and they end up wrapping it around their own necks.
You mean to tell me Trump is doing so well because he uses the same technique as the press uses against every other Republican?
That Bastard!!!!!!
‘Although the author intended his article to insult Trump, I took it as quite a compliment.’
Yes, I think it was a good article with a different slant on how Trump is working.
The last sentence of this article is off, it implies Trump is playing dirty and to beat him is to play dirty too, and Trump isn’t playing dirty... He’s just not playing the milquetoast politic game of trying not to offend anyone and standing for nothing.
Trump Tiger.....I like it!
