In an unusual alliance, a House Democrat and Republican have teamed up to urge the Obama administration to stop trying to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad and focus all its efforts on destroying Islamic State militants.
Reps. Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat, and Austin Scott, a Republican, introduced legislation on Friday to end what they called an "illegal war" to overthrow Assad, the leader of Syria accused of killing tens of thousands of Syrian citizens in a more than four-year-old civil war entangled in a battle against IS extremists, also known as ISIS.
"The U.S. is waging two wars in Syria," Gabbard said. "The first is the war against ISIS and other Islamic extremists, which Congress authorized after the terrorist attack on 9/11. The second war is the illegal war to overthrow the Syrian government of Assad."
Scott said, "Working to remove Assad at this stage is counter-productive to what I believe our primary mission should be."

Obama say forget what Congress wants, focus on what Iran wants.

Ted Cruz and sane citizens have been saying that all along.
We know Assad is no angel but there are much worse who will likely end up in power if he’s gone.
And, Putin and Assad broadly smile. The old KGB tactic works. Again.
Sometimes what the enemy wants makes sense, for everyone.
This will be ignored first thing in the morning.
Obama created ISIS.
No matter what congress says he will not kill his own creation.
Putin isn’t nearly as bad as Stalin, but we worked with Stalin to defeat Hitler. Do you believe we should not have allied with Stalin against Hitler?
Or maybe, alternatively, you think ISIS really isn’t that bad, all those ISIS massacres of Christians and other innocents don’t really matter. ?
Iran does want Assad to remain entrenched.
False dilemma. When Putin turns on Iran, then we can think of such things.
Such as the destruction of all Jews and the expedited return of the Mahdi?
Obama will be gone before Assad
If Assad outlasts Obama, it will be because Putin had the gonads to go in and defend Assad against the Obama/McCain jihadi terrorists.
No doubt, but especially for Assad and Putin.
Iran does want Assad to remain entrenched.
So do Syria’s Christians, because he has defended them against jihadi killers.

I’m just holding you to a single standard. If you think we can’t ally with Putin because he’s evil, then how much worse was it to ally with Stalin. Maybe consistency isn’t your strong point?
