Republican David Vitter says he is not going to run again for the U.S. Senate after losing in an upset race for governor to Democrat John Bel Edwards.
Vitter made the announcement during an appearance to campaign supporters in the New Orleans suburbs Saturday evening after it became apparent that he would not win the governor's race.
Vitter, who has one year left in his second U.S. Senate term, told supporters that before entering the governor's race, he and his wife had decided that he would not seek another term in the Senate.

Would Jindal run for Senate? Christie has no interest in running in NJ.
No. Jindal’s unpopulars are sky-high and cost Vitter the race. He would lose in a Senate race at this point.
I was under the impression that Jindal was very popular - what happened that he’s so unpopular?
“I was under the impression that Jindal was very popular - what happened that heâs so unpopular?”
What made him unpopular, among other reasons, is that he concentrated on running for president for eight years instead of doing his job.
Willie Robertson step up to the plate my man duty calls!
It would actually be a good thing for the democratic party to recover a conservative wing, but I'll believe it when I see it.
A lot of people do not understand LA politics and how indiscretions play into it. I’ll copy what I wrote elsewhere to someone who wrote the same thing you did:
LA has a laissez-faire attitude on peccadilloes (so long as theyâre not dead girl/live boy sort as Fast Eddie Edwards pointed out), so Vitterâs long-ago past indiscretion (already well known when he ran for Senator) had minimal impact. The state voted twice for Clinton despite his behavior.
When the incumbent party Governor has high disapprovals (Jindals were over 60% negative), that spreads to the same-party nominee. In almost every instance when that occurs, the incumbent party loses.
Had Jindal high approvals, Vitter would have handily won. Also keep in mind the RINO Establishment hates Vitter and tried to sandbag him from two directions, and add to that that of the two RINOs, Dardenne endorsed Edwards and Angelle gave the OK for his supporters and $$ people to back Edwards. This was a world-class RINO screw-over.
Jindal knew his job performance (as governor) and perception with the voters there were declining rapidly due to his preoccupation with running for president. Yet he decided to run for president anyways.
He did not run a classy campaign and it was doomed the moment he took potshots at Donald Trump. Would not be surprised if Louisiana voters are so disgusted with Jindal that they voted against his would-be successor out of spite.
Evidence pointing towards that conclusion is that the Republican candidate for Lt. Gov. won by a wide margin. So this wasn't an anti-conservative vote we saw in Louisiana last night - it was an anti-Jindal vote.
