Hacking group Anonymous disables thousands of pro-ISIS Twitter accounts and taking militant websites offline
Anonymous have stepped up their campaigns against the Islamic State They declared war on the jihadis in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks One group claims to have suppressed over 10,000 social media pages Some have posed as recruits to gain information on the Dark Web Head of the Ghost Security Group said they are playing an intelligence role The volunteer organization has been sending data to the FBI and other agencies via Congressional terrorism adviser, Michael S. Smith II
Islamic State sympathizers using social media to spread propaganda and recruit fighters are now drawing an increasing amount of return fire from activists who have been knocking some sites offline and infiltrating others.
Anonymous, who declared war on the jihadis after the attacks in Paris, is the latest to draw attention to such campaigns.
Members claimed credit this week for having thousands of pro-IS Twitter accounts disabled.
But others claim to have been doing more for longer. One group that feeds information to the U.S. government says it has suppressed tens of thousands of Twitter accounts since January, and its members have posed as would-be recruits to gain information on so-called Dark Web operations supporting the Islamic State.
'We're playing more of an intelligence role,' said the executive director of Ghost Security Group, who declined to be named, citing security concerns. The group is a volunteer organization that has been sending data to the FBI and other agencies via a Congressional terrorism adviser, Michael S. Smith II.

I don’t like Anonymous, but good work on this one.
We ought to be paying hackers to do things like this (and to plant dangerous malware.)
I guess they want us to take their word for it.
This is the same bunch who just outed a bunch of KKKlowns, only to discover that they were not in the KKK at all.
Well.. “A” for effort I guess.
Doesn’t that void known sources of intel?
Won’t it now take time to figure out their new accounts?
“A” for effort I guess.
They’ve screwed up.....again.
Sometimes they do more harm than good. Also remember....Anon are overwhelmingly pro Pali.
I hate that mask. Why not wear Uncle Sam or are they not Americans?
It takes about 5 minutes to set up a new account, so who cares?
‘Anonymous’.. You mean a rogue element within our NSA? THAT Anonymous?
Here you go, ISIS martyrs, your 72 virgins. Times are lean, you’ll take what you can get.
I don’t like the mask either*; but, Anonomyous is an international, not American non-organization of anarchists. I don’t see them having much in common with Uncle Sam. Also, Guy Fawkes was either a hero or an anti-hero; depending on your perspective — kind of like Anonomyous.
*Actually, I mostly don’t like the type of people, who usually wear that mask at demonstrations.
At first I assumed Anonymous was a group of Americans. But then someone in the media interviewed an anonymous representative speaking on behalf of Anonymous. The interview was conducted in writing. And the words used by the Anonymous rep were spelled as in British Standard English (i.e. organised, instead of organized).
That's what jumped out at me, anyway. So, that person, at least, probably wasn't American. Plus, the mask is of Guy Fawkes, who was English.
the mask is Guy Fawkes.
At the moment, I have no idea who that is. I know...”Google it!”
