Lawmakers have been struggling for decades to find ways to make sure that motorists have insurance. But if anything, there is an even greater incentive now.

Just link their License to Insurance, No Insurance, Instant Suspension, then make it a MANDATORY ARREST and 90 days in Jail for Driving on a Suspended License.

Then we need to Protect the TAXPAYERS, All persons that can demonstrate an injury or loss from an automobile accident where the Driver could not demonstrate a Legal Presence in the US, shall be entitled to fair and just compensation from the Public Employees as a whole.

“Just link their License to Insurance, No Insurance, Instant Suspension, then make it a MANDATORY ARREST”

Already a reality in the jurisdictions that care to enforce the laws. In Ga, no plates issued without valid insurance, piece of paper is not accepted, must be certified on-line by the insurance company, not from driver input. Then, if insurance is canceled, the state is immediately notified by the insurer, and the tag is revoked.

In non-sanctuary cities, the sheriff’s dept has several patrol cars with licenseplate scanners. These scanners can read every plate on the road, coming or going, AND read every plate while cruising parking lots. Cars with canceled insurance are impounded, when found, and drivers arrested if caught driving a “flagged” plate.

This is not new technology, been a mature product for more than a decade. Many police depts have this capability, but few are actually using it.

I’ve never been a fan of trying to use technology to solve a social ill, but I will give it a try anyway.

Driver’s licenses should have a chip like a credit card. Motor vehicles should have chip readers like credit card readers with a WiFi connection; if the license is suspended, the card reader will not read the suspended license. No insurance, the license gets suspended. No valid license, the car doesn’t start. In order to run, the car has to have a valid license in the card reader at all times.

This would probably cut down on car theft, too.

Would it solve all the problems? Of course not. People would figure out a way around it (borrow a valid license from a friend). But it’s a start.

In my state if you don’t have current insurance on your vehicle they demand you provide proof or surrender your tags. They thought my insurance had lapsed and did that to me. It was a big WTF moment for sure, but I got it straightened out.
