The area is infamous for a brutal ISIS campaign of massacres, enslavement and rape against Yazidis, a minority group whose faith the jihadists consider heretical to be devil worship.
No Muslim (or Christian or Jew) who knows anything about the Yazidis religion considers them to be heretical Muslims. Their doctrine is basically a form of gnosticism in which the demiurge (the Peacock Spirit) is described as having rebelled against the beneficent high God in a way reminiscent of the fall of Lucifer (or even more the fall of the djinn Iblis in Mohammedan legend). However, the accusation of devil worship is not quite just, since unlike the Abrahamic faiths, the Yazidi have no notion that spiritual beings cannot repent -- the Peacock Spirit, according to their legends repented of his rebellion -- nonetheless, essentially all Muslims and many Christians in the Middle East still accuse the Yazidi of being devil worshippers.
