I find those “great circle” routes interesting.

I flew from Atlanta to Seoul once and couldn’t figure out why we were over snow covered mountains for hours.

In my minds eye we would hit the Pacific coast around Portland and fly north of Hawaii then into South Korea. The reality was over Canada, Alaska and eastern Siberia.

It’s pretty amazing looking at the world from the perspective of the top of the world. You can clearly see it makes more sense to go from NYC to Japan by way of Canada and Siberia as opposed to going across the U.S. Mainland and the Pacific.
