Shortly after he was sworn in as speaker of the House, Rep. Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., admitted to his colleagues: âThe House is broken. We are not solving problems; we are adding to them. Neither the members nor the people are satisfied with how things are going.â
Ryan continued, however, âI am not interested in laying blameâ â or, for that matter, in accepting his share of it. If the House seems broken, itâs because of Congressâ consistent failure to exercise its legitimate powers.
Our fundamental document, the Constitution, Article I, Section 1, begins: âAll legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States.â The rest of Article I sets forth the many powers the framers allocated to what they thought would be the most powerful of our three branches of government.
In his first act as incoming speaker, Ryan signed off on a deal that had been secretly negotiated by outgoing Speaker John Boehner. A key provision of that deal was to surrender Congressâ authority to âborrow money on the credit of the United Statesâ for the remainder of President Obamaâs term in office.

If Ryan thinks he is going to get anywhere by showing the democrats that he is a reasonable guy and eager to work with them he is going to end up like a dead skunk in the middle of the road.
George Dubya Bush tried that the minute he was sworn in back in January 2001.
As soon as he reached out to democrats they took him for everything they could and then they trashed him relentlessly for the next 8 years.
Sad to say but they basically made a fool out of him.
Or let him make a fool out of himself.
Dubya worked to push Ted Kennedy’s “No Child Left Behind” act into law and then as thanks, Kennedy turned right around and treated Bush like trash.
Don’t hold your breath folks. You’ll be waiting a long time.
He shouldn’t do anything but what got him the gavel. Why would he do anything else? This “Republicans need to do x, y, z” stuff has gotten old.
agreed
Congress also gave up its power to limit federal spending >>>
congress cannot alter the constitutional system we have. it can only subvert it’s power in collusion with other corrupt branches and the american people, who allow it to do so.
Our system was never set up to deal with a true Tyrant.
If Congress had a police arm that could arrest members of the Executive branch, then there would be a true check and balance.
But there isn't.
And therefore we have witnessed members of Congress express their "outrage!" for years, and then........nothing. Utterly nothing.
The courts are lost - long ago become tyrannies unto themselves.
