Cruz also wants to eliminate the IRS, and with it the income tax eventually (and first).
I am sure he can be persuaded to repeal the 16th Amendment too.
The president has no role in amending the Constitution. If that's your goal, you need to be working on it around the clock and not tying it to a presidential election.
