Principal says standardized testing is 'modern-day slavery'

n an online rant, a Bronx public school principal has likened standardized testing to slavery, redlining and crack cocaine in damaging the lives of minorities.

“Public school high-stakes standardized testing is a form of modern-day slavery, and it is designed to continue the proliferation of inequality,” Cornerstone Academy for Social Action Middle School Principal Jamaal Bowman says in an Aug. 31 blog entry titled “The Tyranny of Standardized Testing.”

“America was born of horror for black people and that horror continues today for brown and poor people as well. Slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, crack cocaine and now standardized testing were all sanctioned by the American government. All designed to destroy the mind, body and soul of black and brown people.”

Bowman blamed the US government for perpetuating a “legacy of oppression” — with the Obama administration adopting the Race to the Top program that prodded states to use student exam results to evaluate teachers and promote charter schools.

“From the Continental Congress to Race to the Top, America has a tradition of disenfranchising the masses,” he said in an Oct. 4 post on the personal blog.

“and it is designed to continue the proliferation of inequality”

So everyone taking the same test is inequality. What a different world this clown lives in.

When there are no longer standards, no will will have any standards.

Are not minorities, I am going to presume that he only refers to Blacks and Hispanics and not Asians, taught exactly the same subjects in the same manner as Whites? Why then should those minorities be given tests designed to give them an unfair advantage over those not considered by him to be minorities this Principal is a condescending racist ass and is contributing to the reason these people are held down.

It will be like the Soviet Union, where all that mattered was your social class, and your political loyalty.

Everything is now “slavery”. At least that’s what I’m being told.

It really diminishes the meaning of true slavery to make really stupid comparisons like this.

I took standardized tests as a kid, sometimes they lasted several days, but afterwards, I was able to ride my bike, shoot pheasant, etc. and wasn’t locked up at night.

Idiotic.

Is this idiot on crack?

Blacks and minorities have been exempt from standardized testing for years. Decades.

Hence the problem.

Educrats dumb down and lower the bar for blacks - assuming they are inferior to white? And we now have entire generations of hoodrats who can’t read or write.

This man needs to be punched in the mouth and then beaten till he can't get up.

It is past time we stopped tolerating mouthy idiots and time we started beating mouthy idiot/liars for talking stupid.

As Mike Rowe said the other day, commentary such as this trivializes Slavery.

If he’d compared compulsory school attendance to slavery, he could have made a case.

The guy is a moron. Tests do not discriminate. Tests are the most objective way to judge a persons ability and knowledge of a subject. Tests discriminate against people who didn’t study.

The SAT was developed by Harvard to find worthy candidates who did not attend fancy prep schools and led privileged lives. Take away the SAT and the ivy league will once again be the sole domain of the prep schools.

Why don’t you try teaching the kids instead of making excuses for them (actually, excuses for yourself)?

"Income taxes and property taxes are like modern day slavery."

I was amazed to learn that #1 taxed New York State has lost 18 (eighteen) seats in Congress since 1950!

The "Underground Railroad" is running in reverse, and it's not underground.
