New U.S. applications for unemployment benefits last week recorded their largest increase in eight months, but remained at levels consistent with a fairly healthy labor market.
Other data on Thursday showed a surprise gain in productivity in the third quarter after a drop in self-employment contributed to overall hours worked falling for the first time in six years, restraining labor-related production costs. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 16,000 to a seasonally adjusted 276,000 for the week ended Oct. 31, the Labor Department said. It was the largest weekly increase since late February. ...

The immense gratitude Republicans owe Obama
6 Comments
BY ANDREW MALCOLM
One of these days Republicans will begin to realize what a political miracle-worker Barack Obama has been for the Party of Lincoln these past 82 months.
Yes, yes, Obama’s economic policies and regulations have created the worst economic recovery and most sluggish job market in six decades. They’ve stifled the dreams of millions, chased them from the workplace, limited their choices and increased widespread reliance on government handouts.
His serial lies and cynical abuse of authority and privilege through over-reaching power and over-blown language have corroded Americans’ trust in their most hallowed institutions.
Obama’s sequester suggestion helped hollow America’s once dominant military to an enfeebled condition requiring years to rebuild. Obama’s stubbornly naive foreign policies, if you call them policies, have turned America into the paper tiger once the wishful dream of communists.
Obama’s reluctance or inability to lead in anything other than appeasement created vast vacuums of power abroad for eager opponents to expand as thousands perish in the conflicts.
But, boy oh boy, has Obama devastated the Democrat Party. As Tuesday’s off-year election results revealed across the country, it will take those folks years to recover, while Obama makes millions off his next ghost-written books.
Yes, indeed, the Me-First President did win a second term, albeit with five million fewer votes than his first. As the Obama countdown clock winds through the last 441 days of his 2,922 total, let us count the blessings this Chicago Democrat has bestowed on Republicans:
Rooters makes the largest increase in jobless claims in months sound like great news.
The Obama-Controlled Bureau of Labor Statistics will keep lying through their teeth, fudging the numbers and playing silly games with the statistics until he’s out of office. If a Republican takes over at that time, they will start using the real numbers, shocking the American public, and place all the blame on the new POTUS, even if he’s only had a week in office...................
Ah yes, the obligatory 'but' sentence.
I have reached the point where I no longer believe any thing from the Federals. Good news or bad news.
Amazing, that power of suggestion. Here all along I thought it took legislation passed by our Republican-led Congress to fund the military (or not).
“Rooters makes the largest increase in jobless claims in months sound like great news.”
It works. The Fraud’s worshippers usually seem to repeat these particular lies as being among his biggest accomplishments.
They will be putting the pom poms down come January 21, 2017.
I agree. The numbers are so manipulated or just flat out BS, there's no point. I can see what I see in Kansas City (albeit just a local snapshot) and I know it's not good.
Unfortunately the labor market is not healthy, so the high ratio of new claims vs active jobs is a strong sign of massive layoffs as manufacturing spins down the socialist drain.
The first time claims number comes from the states.
You are exactly right, that will happen.
I know how liberals think, if you can call it that.
Back in 2001, right after 9/11, in October, l was working with a very liberal co-worker, a female, who made a statement concerning George W. Bush, “He’s only been in office nine months and he’s already got us in a war.”...................................
True, but they pass thru the BLS, and I’m sure they play with them.........................
Here’s my shocked face: :-0
Productivity = (stuff made) / (labor required to make it). If you get rid of the labor (i.e. jobs), the denominator is smaller and productivity goes up.
Usually, this is a good thing, because then jobs are created to make other stuff or provide new services. Not with this administration.
How can productivity go up if you have zero labor?
What a idiot your co-worker was.
