In all fairness, several parts of the article implied mental illness. For instance, substance abuse suggests “problems inside”, if, big if, the substances are used to “self medicate.” Substance abuse can also make preexisting conditions worse.
However, at the same time, it mentions that he was deeply concerned about “mind control” at the church his father was attending, and wondered if they were “satanic”. Again, by itself, this is just eccentric. But it also means “problems outside.”
The usual age of onset of schizophrenia in males is from 16-25 years old. However, this is onset, and it can take years for it to fully develop. It is relatively common, with around 1 to 1.5% of the population developing it.
Importantly, if he did have schizophrenia, it might show up at his autopsy. “Recently neuroscientists have detected gray matter loss of up to 25% (in some areas). The damage started in the parietal, or outer, regions of the brain but spread to the rest of the brain over a five year period. Patients with the worst brain tissue loss also had the worst symptoms.”
Other common things which could explain his behavior is a brain tumor, steroid or prescription or illegal drug abuse.
I didn't go by the article. I went by the reaction to a photo and another poster's reaction to that statement. It's happened many times on FR. "She has crazy eyes" or "Look at his eyes. He must be a loon". There are a few FReepers who think they can tell a person's whole life story by one picture.
Or, a sentence...
