So did your locale vote your Sheriff out of office? If not, why not? Why wasn’t the deputy ever charged and why was he allowed to keep his job? Your story gives very little detail which leads me to believe there may be more to the story than you are remembering perhaps?

Too many voters receive their incomes directly or indirectly from government and sympathize with their rackets and the control that they have over them. Some animals are more equal than others.
