We just got a republican back in the 2014 election after 4 terms or so of a Dhimmicrat . The area went from liberal to moderate (what you call liberal elsewhere). I see no way our congressman, Lee Zeldin, would have gone any other way. It is the curse of the northeast

I like Gohmert. He would make a fine GOP whip.

“Daniel Webster of Florida, who actually told his supporters not to vote for him and Webster ended up supporting Ryan.”

This whole thing was rigged. Now Boehner 2.0 runs the House.

I wonder how many of those 236 voted for Boner the last time around?

‘Paul Gosar-Arizona’

This is why Club for Growth tried so hard to defeat Gosar in the primary. He’s anti-amnesty, solidly conservative, and unwilling to place party unity above fidelity to his constituency.

What’s WRONG is that ONLY nine did not vote for a RINO.

I know Dan Webster from his days in the Florida legislature and respect him. There is usually little to be gained in politics by being a bitter die hard type permanently at odds with your party and its leadership. Having dared to challenge Ryan but not getting near enough support to make a go of it, Webster endorsing and voting for Ryan in the end was to be expected, not so much for Ryan’s sake but as a sign of respect for and accord with the decision of the House GOP caucus.

It was difficult to tell listening to Speaker Ryan’s acceptance speech, if he was going to have an open door for the Heroic Nine, and the democrats, or if it was only for a united Republican majority and the Democrats.

We will find out soon enough as the “agenda” unfolds, but it appeared that he was speaking out of both sides of his mouth while sending interesting messages about doing the peoples business. Just way too much approval from the democrat side of the isle from my perspective. I am not comfortable with what I see and hear.

That would be, democrats represent x millions of people, Republicans represent x millions, and nine tea party republican holdouts and party poopers represent whom?

What Paul Ryan does not seem to understand, is the nine party poopers represent enough to sink the Presidential aspirations of any Republican.

Listened to Ryan's speech. His mantra was move on which means giving Obama a mulligan on everything he has done along with the IRS, EPA, and Fast and Furious.

I may wax a bit to philosophical about this, but I think the reason why few true conservatives were willing to step into the speaker’s race was that the speaker is, by definition, a moderating position. An individual representative can wield more influence outside the speakership, IMO.

Now, Ryan is no core conservative. He has demonstrated that in the past. However, he does listen to others - and the freedom caucus and its members seem to understand the power they have, as well as some of its limits. Perhaps there is a balance to be had between the new speaker and his party’s most conservative firebrands. We will see.

I wish others had stepped in to run, but they did not. Therefore, the remaining germane question is whether the rest of the house GOP, especially the conservatives, and we the people can steer this new speaker on an acceptable path or not. We can either choose to accept the challenge or we can choose to whine about it. If Ryan proves to be unacceptable, then we have to foment another revolution against the power structure in the house. If he proves to be acceptably steerable, then we have to choose our battles and draw our lines in the sand wisely.

We should also start grooming some of the more conservative members of the house for eventual leadership. Thrusting someone - even a rock-ribbed conservative - into leadership when they are mentally unprepared for it is almost a guarantee of disaster.

Please feel free to dissect my opinion here, FRiends.

Finding conservatives to run against these corrupt representatives is a big problem for us. Staying a conservative in DC is a big problem for them.

Wow. It would appear that my congressman, Steve King, voted for Ryan.

Shameful.
