I would hope that the Russians were escorted by our carrier rather than free to buzz because of a slow response.
My question would be is “WHY was this allowed to happen in the first place”? If an Aircraft Carrier cannot protect itself better than this then perhaps we have the wrong folks in charge?

They were bear bombers which are very noisy and probably picked up from very long away the were shadowed by F-18 hornets but letting it get within one mile is dangerous of coarse if we shoot them down it becomes an incident. Same stuff happened all the time during the cold war.

How in hell did they even allow them within 1 mile of the carrier? They should have launched aircraft when 1. they saw them coming straight toward them and 2. why did then not launch aircraft when the radar showed them within 10 miles of the carrier?
Politically correct Navy is the answer for they were too afraid of “rocking the boat of Political Correctness” and being blamed for taking the actions they were trained to take.
Our armed forces are at the total mercy of hostile forces because no one can act except upon approved orders from PC officers.
