Minutes before the economy-focused debate started, the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed by Cruz outlining his tax plan, which calls for a 10 percent flat income tax.

An Income Tax, Ted?

No thanks. The only fair and non-intrusive taxes are consumption-based taxes.

Income Tax is a Tyrannical Marxist abomination, and always will be.

It should not be the primary form of federal taxation.

I'm not with Cruz on any form of Income Tax.

Ted Cruz is still my first choice, but I had hoped for more courage from him than simply maintaining a horrible and invasive tax system, albeit at an ostensibly lower percentage rate.

I agree with a consumption tax as long as it doesn’t become a VAT. The problem is unless we remove the ability to levy an income tax, we’ll end up with both a federal sales tax and an income tax.

A consumption tax is very unfair compared to an income tax. It places a heavier burden on people who spend most of their income vs. those who save most of it. And there is no reason a tax system should reward savers over spenders. A consumption tax allows the government to influence economic decisions more, always a bad thing. It’s easier to make the decision to spend less than it is to make the decision to earn less. You can cut your budget if the price of an item gets too high but you’re never going to ask your boss for a pay cut just to lower your income tax.

I hope you have learned by now, you don't get everything you want. A consumption tax has its good points, but it's not going to happen. Cruz’ plan is radical enough (in a good way). This nation is not ever going to reject an income tax.

He knows, as does anyone with any sense, that nobody, I repeat nobody will be able to champion basically trashing the current tax system. The ruling class would never allow it but you can play their game and start small and build.

He is suggesting what would be an incremental change to the system which would propel bigger changes in the future. You cannot just stop eating to lose weight you have to work it off by several pounds over time.
